Rookie Mate?

If someone needs a mate, I am probably your last candidate you would want to chose, but I am going to give this a shot anyway.

My name is Dennis Rehmann, I am 18 and fresh out of high school. I have been fishing for 5 years now, 4 offshore, mainly with my dad. Everything that I have learned since I started have came from professionals, such as mates and captains out of Ocean City, MD. However am I no way claiming to be anywhere near a pro. I have been fishing on charter boats several times before so I know my around a cockpit. I ask questions in order to do the job the right way. More so, the way the captain wants it, but I do know how to do all the basics. If you're willing to put a little time into me, I can reward you with a passionate wannabe. I get enjoyment out of cleaning and maintenance so don't be shy to ask me to do anything. Since I am young, I can go anywhere. Whether you're in Maine or Florida, or California. I did study pre-hospital emergency care for 12 weeks to be an EMT but because of the economy, it is a hard business to get into right now. Wahoonbox. I just want you to do my dad was a great fan of yours! He is no longer here with us, but you were one of his greatest idols. Next to Scott Walker and Tred Barta haha.

But thank you two very much. If you ever happen to catch some sound waves about needing a mate, let them know where to come!! I am tired of dreaming and want to make this a reality so I really appreciate all the publicity I can get.

Cant offer you a mate job but your always welcome on my bat to practice honing your skills.

This year has been real slow for me as I sold my boat earlier in the year and have spent the summer getting the new one ready for the fall. It now ready and sitting in a slip at fishermans.

Good luck finding a boat to work on, If I was looking for a way to get my foot in the door on a boat I would walk the docks and talk to as many Capts as I could.....Tell them what your looking for and offer to be a second mate, wash the boat....what ever they want for free.....thats right free, think of it as an interview and if you work for it just maybe you will be rewarded for it with a job.....if nothing else if they do take you up on a second mate ride and decide your not what they were looking for....you got to go out and see how they do it for no money out of pocket and a little elbow grease washing the boat......hell we pay our way to fish our boat and still have to clean it....Best of luck to you, I wish I was 18 years old and had it to do all over again for sure.

Big, when I was a little bit younger, it seems every time I tried to do that, they were always on the run or something of that nature. . Maybe they just didnt want to bother with me at such a young age. I will try a more professional approach this time. There is still some time left in the season so I will definitely offer myself as a back up or anything they would like. I appreciate your advice and will definitely give it a shot. I have never thought about that.

Hey I would suggest taking out the first sentence of your post. Everything else you said was right on the money. I was in you shoes back in the day and I just spent my time on the docks. I would fish the docks late at night and talk to the Captains and Mates after hours and after they had a couple drinks. Eventually they would invite me to go fun fishing with them or run as a second mate on overnighters. One thing led to another and I was doing it full time in the Keys and then on Private boats. I would think about washing a couple private boats to make a couple bucks and then just ask if you can tag along. Once you get a couple trips under your belt you can start to use people are references.
