Description of Work
The Marine Fisheries Technician II supports the Pamlico district
biologists on finfish projects. The Marine Fisheries Technician II
will work on a federally funded gill net project and other state and
federally funded projects as necessary. The technician will: collect
fish using gill nets in the open sound and river systems; use sampling
gear (trawls, pots, gillnets, seines, etc) to collect biological data
from various habitats; identify, measure, weigh, and examine the
reproductive condition of crustaceans and finfish; tag finfish;
process, record, compile, submit, and verify biological data; perform
data quality control. Other duties include: operate and maintain
outboard motors, boats, trailers, trucks and other sampling equipment,
lifting heavy cartons of fish, computer use, and working independently
and with others. Normal work hours will be late evening and early
morning.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
The following are required for this position; knowledge of marine/
estuarine species identification, and biological sampling techniques;
knowledge of recreational and commercial fisheries and associated
fishing gears; ability to operate and trailer boats; ability to
operate computers; and the ability to maintain sampling gear. A valid
drivers license is required.
Training and Experience Requirements
Graduation from a community or technical college with an associate
degree in fisheries management and one year of experience in the
fisheries industry including experience with vessel operation; or an
equivalent combination of training and experience. Degrees must be
from appropriately accredited institutions.
