Description of Work
Coordinates and manages staff activities involving the evaluation of
water pollution using benthic macroinvertebrate and fish communities
as the primary measure of water quality impacts. The work unit
collects and performs benthic macroinvertebrate and fish biological
community analyses based on standard operation procedures in
conjunction with physical and chemical data. The Supervisor and the
work unit conduct field studies across the state which requires some
overnight travel. Primary functions of this position include: program
supervision; coordination of staff work; technical expertise or
guidance for long term and short-term special studies. The position
is required to review regulatory requirements for biological reports
and memos and to provide scientific interpretations for various DWQ
activities including NPDES permit decisions. The position requires the
hiring and supervision of a team of aquatic scientists and specialists.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
1)Must demonstrate supervisory skills including work planning and team
management as well as the abilities to plan, organize, and direct work
operations; train and supervise subordinate workers; and review and
critique the work of others. 2)Knowledge of the technical concepts of
at least one of the disciplines supervised with working knowledge of
the other disciplines. 3)Ability to plan and conduct technical
projects and to summarize results in written form.
Training and Experience Requirements
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in one
of the agricultural, biological, engineering, environmental, natural
resources sciences or closely related curriculum and four years of
progressive experience in environmental work; or an equivalent
combination of education and experience. PREFERRED: Excellent oral and
written communication skills preferred as are knowledge of DWQ
programs and responsibilities. Familiarity with budget preparations
is also desired. NOTE: Interviews for this position will be conducted
March 15-17, 2010 Degrees must be from appropriately accredited
institutions.
