How long is the season? 6 months? seems like a good deal, boat out the water/ not operating for at least 4 months of the year, is this the norm for this style of set up?
With the way things are going cost of running wise on a 60ft boat, going to a set salaried Idea for your staff has to be the way to go , plus if you have the greatest pit boss and skip they can relax knowing that they can afford to pay that "car" at the end of the month, plus the rent, if you do charter then thats a bonus, from the tips side, thats what tips are a "bonus" not salaries!
If you do not perform you do not get period, I feel that forcing anyone to rely on tips as an income is both immoral and plain down right, just not right ! It's just fine while you are young and foot loose, start to settle impossible..
I too have worked on those lines for three or four years as a game ranger in Africa paid peanuts, and lived off tips, you can only work 5 years max then the wheels come off, even with a total dedication to the work, and love of what you are doing you still need security. Anyway sorry to have mouthed off now but it burns my goat that in this day and age it still carries on. Smacks of child labor in the far east.
There may be things that I do not have a grasp of with owning a large boat, but people need to live a full year not six months of it.
    My 2 cent worth!
usually the guys on the west coast with real pocket book like "Bad Company","Kelsey Lee" are constantly on the move. While others just stay in cabo for the season. Most of these operations have an annual spending into hundreds of thousands of dollar in fuel, salaries, insurance, haul outs, spun 7 bladed props ,travel and food are some just to get the ball rolling. That is without all the tournaments which is another couple hundred at least. Very few crews on the west coast are fortunate enough to even operate right now even with the price of fuel down. Most owners took major hits in the market and are definately feeling the pinch.Just my opinion

I have often given thought to a full time Captain for my 54' Bertram. She gets fished maybe 4 days a month. The boat is in Veneice LA. What would a reasonable salary be? what benefits would be normal? Would it be reasonable to expect the Captain to personally keep the boat washed and clean? Perform normal maintenance like oil changes?

With more boats becoming "dock queens" is it becoming harder to find good Captains? Last, is there such a thing as a "part time" Captain who spreads his time between 2 or 3 boats?

    Thanks for your comments!

$1000 per foot annual salary and hopefully some health benefits. It would be absolutely reasonable to expect a full-time professional captain to keep the boat maintained in every way. There are certainly guys out there that may be interested in part time positions...especially retired guys that are looking for something to keep them busy and keep some change in their pocket.

just to throw a wrench in the wheel, what is the general consensus on a pay scale for heading up a multiple boat operation? say a 60 ft big boat and 25-30ft cc as a tender/runabout. staying true to the $1000/ft, that would total out to around 85-90 ft of boat and making for a 80k-90k salary. thats a big chunk of change. where is the ceiling? how far down do you compromise?

    todays pay scale

All this talk about pay scale is crazy. What is normal is what the owner and crew agree upon. As a professional Captain on a traveling Yacht I live aboard, have my meals taken care of and a salary. there is no minimum or normal pay. It is what I and the owner agree upon. With boats being sold and layed up right now I know many qualified crews that are out of work and Others that have taken pay cuts or cut from full time to part time jobs.

If you have the experience necessary and don't like the pay you are offered don't take the job. If you need the job to pay your bills take what you can and shut up about the pay. be happy you have a job. Also a new crew member can't compare his pay package with others who have worked for an owner for 5 or 8 or 10 years. Discussions like this cause crew members to quit jobs because they think they are underpaid when they hear $1000/ft and they are not making that. Every owner has an amount they are willing to pay and feel comfortable with. if that is not your comfort level look for the next job.

Hawaii pay and west coast pay sucks. When I fished out of Fl and Bahamas the pay was really good compared to the Islands.

WOW....I TIP MY RIGGERS TO YA FOR THIS ONE! GREAT RESPONSE HERE!!!

I LOOK AT MY PAY AS PRIVATE MATTERS BETWEEN ME AND THE PAYEE...I COULD CARE LESS WHAT THE GUY BEFORE ME TOOK HOME IN PAY

NOT ONE MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL PLAYER HAS THE SAME SALARY AS ANOTHER PLAYER SO WHY SHOULD OFFSHORE EMPLOYEES BE ANY DIFFERENT...IF YOU ARE A PROFESSIONAL THEN YOU WILL BE PAID AS ONE...A REPUTABLE BOAT OWNER WILL RECOGNIZE THIS AS WELL

I EARNED MY RIGHT TO ASK TOP DOLLAR AND I DELIVER WHAT I OFFER AND THEN SOME....IF THE BOAT OWNER IN QUESTION DOES NOT WISH TO PAY ME MY ASKING SALARY THE I WILL SIT IT OUT....I WILL NOT WORK FOR PORK N BEAN PAY....

WHAT BLOWS ME AWAY WITH THE MATE/CAPTAIN PROFESSION IS WHEN AN EMPLOYEE IS ALLOWED TO DRINK ON THE JOB.....NOW IF THAT AIN'T ABOUT THE MOST IDOTIC THING I HAVE EVER WITNESSED

HERE I SEE MILLION DOLLAR RIGS PARKED AND THE EMPLOYEE IN IN THE PIT DRINKING A BEER ON THE JOB

IN MY OPINION....AN OPEN BEER IN THE COCKPIT OF A CHARTER BOAT IS WRONG WHEN IT CONCERNS THE CREW MEMBERS...24/7/365....IT LOOKS BAD AND NON PRO.
