OK...heres the job:
48' Sportfisher docked in Moorehead near charter dock...knowledgeable owner lives in New York and comes down one long weekend per month. Owner has local friends (ex-captain) as other local contact and fishing buddy. Needs someone local, or willing to temporarily relocate, as captain to help with routine maintenance and supervise some ongoing renovation projects (adding cockpit controls, replacing salon doors, new enclosure etc...) to get this boat into tip-top condition prior to Big Rock tournament. Owner to fish about one weekend per month until then. Boat likely goes to montauk for remainder of summer then who knows what for next fall. Prima Donnas or drunkards need not contact me, I'm looking for a real boat captain willing to do what it takes to keep boat safe, running well and looking good. Must be willing to perform simple engine room maintenance (filter changes, changing pumps, tracing leaks etc...) as well as cosmetic maintenance (washing, buffing, waxing etc...) Also, want to organize all tackle, rods, reels rigs etc...so that this fishing machine is always ready to go and looking good. Maintaining boat finances will also be responsibility. I anticipate the ability to create about 3 good days of work per week continuously until the Big Rock and can pay $150-200 per day for the right person depending on abilities and experience. Of course, share of tournament winnings. Will pay extra for extra fishing days as necessary. Please contact me by direct e-mail bobmd@optonline.net with interest and resume. Will be in Mexico from 2/18-2/25 but checking e-mail regularly. Would like to conduct interviews in person 1st or 2nd weekend in March for start of job immediately thereafter. Possibility of lodging available. Thanks, BOB Last edited by cutnrun; 02-17-2008 at 05:23 PM. |

Good luck with your search, but you are offering a job to someone that equates to about $12 per hour. When you pay peanuts you get monkeys. |

Let me break it down to you like this. If you are fishing 3 days: You are at the boat the day before checking and re checking all tackle, bait, boat systems etc. So you should be paid for that day. That makes it 4 days min. Then the fishing days. The day starts at 4 am. Again checking and rechecking everything to get underway. Boat leaves the slip at 5 am and doesn't return until lines out. Usually back at the dock betwween 5 and 6 pm. 2 more hours to clean boat check fluids, get ready for tomorrow. Captain goes home at around 8 pm. This is repeated for 3 days. That's 16 hours a day for 3 days straight. 48 hours of work for $600= $12.50 per hour. That is at the top end of his pay scale. Sure you have the possibility of a bonus for tournament winnings, but the hourly rate for the expectations is way low.
It also sound like you are looking for a full time captain to maintain, supervise renovations and have the boat ready at a beck and call. That's a lot of work to have done for a part time guy. Something will fall through the cracks. This usually results in a pissed off owner. What I'm saying to you is this: You get what you pay for. It's a simple concept that a lot of people like to ignore. The best guys in the business get paid top dollar for a reason. If you want to pay the lowest wage out there you are going to get the guy that is not at the top of their game. I wish you luck in finding someone, but what you are asking here seems like a whole lot of responsibility for little compensation. |

sorry you misinterpreted the job
Without knowing the person that I am, you have accused me of creating a slave labor job. Quite the contrary, I imagined that having a guaranteed $600/week to care for an absentee owners boat might interest some people....and from the volume of replies that I have received, I was correct.
I do agree that you get what you pay for.... nellinov.....may I ask what you would have considered less displeasing/insulting to you as a job post?? BOB |

Sorry I jumped on your post. It did create a lot of interest in it. What I saw was someone that wanted a full time captain for a part time rate.
I don't think that overseeing a complete refit and having the boat ready for fishing trips as a part time job. I also think that you were about 2/3 of the way there on the going rate. If you think of what is required of someone holding the license, $300 a day is even on the low side for fill in work. If you are only working on a part time basis, you have to keep current on a lot of stupid little things that may seem insignificant at one shot, but add up over time. The cost of things like professional insurance, and drug testing need to be factored into a daily cost. I guess what really struck me was the way the post was started in the title. I'm looking for a part time "Captain". May be I read too much into it and it struck a nerve. Were you looking for a real Captain or just a "Captain" figuratively speaking. The job description certainly didn't sound part time. It may have been seasonal, but it seemed more of a full time captains duties while a boat is in a certain location. I guess I read too much into it. I hope it all works out for you and whoever you hire. Neil |
