MARINE SCIENTIST NEEDED FOR CONTRACT POSITION WITH NATIONAL

OCEANIC & ATMOSPHERIC ADMINISTRATION (NOAA)

Vacancy Announcement: Marine Spatial Analyst

Start Date of Appointment: Immediate

A person with academic training in marine biology, oceanography, spatial or landscape

ecology and/or conservation planning is being sought for a full-time contract position

with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Center for Coastal

Monitoring and Assessment (CCMA) Biogeography Branch. The Branch conducts

ecological studies that map, characterize, assess, and model the spatial distributions

and movements of estuarine and marine organisms across habitats throughout the

United States and Island Territories. The successful candidate will have the following

core responsibilities:

1) Provide GIS, statistical, and analytical support to projects mapping marine

ecosystems and biotic distributions in Samoa and American Samoa:

a) Produce basic descriptive statistical summaries of collected data

b) Evaluate and analyze field data to create maps of benthic habitats and species

distributions

c) Develop cartographic products and metadata from spatial data

d) Assist with MPA network analysis

e) Assist with analysis of alternative network scenarios

f) Assist with development of technical reports and journal articles

2) Provide GIS, statistical, and analytical support for other Biogeography Branch

projects

Essential Qualifications

 Good written and oral communication skills

 Relevant experience or academic training in Geographic Information Systems,

especially ArcGIS

 Knowledge of marine biology and spatial ecology

 Graduate training in statistics and experience with multivariate statistics

Preferred Qualifications

 Experience with ArcGIS editing and the use of ArcGIS extensions, such as

Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst and Geostatistical Analyst.

 Experience with statistical software e.g., SAS, Primer and/or JMP

 Knowledge of coral reef ecosystem ecology.

 Knowledge of ocean circulation and larval transport

 Knowledge of MPA design issues

This is not a federal position. The successful candidate will work full-time under a

Consolidated Safety Services, Inc. (CSS) contract. The candidate will be hired for the

NOAA office in Silver Spring, MD.
