Fisheries Technician

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game’s Anadromous Fish Screen Program, located in Salmon, Idaho, does extensive fishery surveys on streams throughout the upper Salmon River Basin. These surveys, requiring the assistance of seasonal employees, collect data on the presence, distribution and density of Federally listed Threatened and Endangered species including Chinook salmon, steelhead and bull trout as well as westslope cutthroat trout, to determine the benefits of existing and future conservation projects within the watershed. Individuals working on these surveys are provided the opportunity to gain useful knowledge and experience that may be applied towards future job opportunities in the field of natural resources. An additional benefit is the opportunity to work in a spectacular outdoor environment with an abundance of fish and wildlife.


Responsibilities:
Work with the Regional Fisheries Biologist and two to three Biological Aides conducting fishery surveys on streams in the upper Salmon River Basin, and other duties as assigned. Sampling methods include snorkeling, redd counts, backpack electrofishing, and weirs. The Technician will be responsible for organizing, preparing for, and overseeing the sampling of fish in a manner consistent with guidelines set for the handling of Federally listed fish species. Will be responsible for assuring that crew members follow specific protocol in the collection of data to assure quality control, and for the entry and basic analysis of data collected. Will also be responsible for maintenance and care of equipment. Work usually consists of a 40-50 hour week, four or five days/week, with some overnight camping in remote locations.


Qualifications/Skills Needed:
Applicant should have completed a Bachelors degree in fisheries or related field. Should have a good knowledge of the identification, life history, anatomy, and ecology of various fish species. Applicant should have some experience with MS Excel and MS Word. This job requires the ability to hike five to ten miles per day over rugged terrain carrying up to fifty pounds in a backpack, standing and walking for several hours in cold water, and working in extreme weather conditions. Must also be able to work cooperatively with fellow crew members to accomplish assigned duties.
