Salary: $1,979-$2,052 per month; may be higher depending on previous employment in

Location: 1 position in Gold Beach, 1 position in Nehalem
Duration: 2 Permanent Positions
Summary of Duties: Conduct field sampling in streams and rivers. Walk or float
streams to count redds and spawning salmon, steelhead and lamprey. Obtain biological
samples from dead fish. Conduct surveys to inventory the physical habitat of streams
using standardized methods. Snorkel or electrofish streams to sample juvenile fishes.
Trap and tag adult salmonids at established trap sites, or by netting. Operate and
maintain mechanical traps. Locate sample sites and gain access permission from
landowners. Review and interpret maps, operate GPS units and use physical landmarks
to locate survey sites. Write, call or visit landowners to explain project activities and ask
for access permission. Keep notes concerning who was contacted and if the landowner
requests a copy of the survey results. Accurately enter or transcribe field data to
appropriate data forms. Electronically upload field data or complete data forms using
data recorded in field, in PDAs and/or notebooks on a daily basis. Prepare brief weekly
summary of field work in season, as requested. Organize and mount scales to prepare
for reading. Clean and maintain vehicles and equipment. Assist other department staff
as needed.
Requirements: Applicants must have a valid driver license and an acceptable driving
record. Other qualifications are not established for these positions. However applicants
with related experience (ability to communicate with anglers and other members of the
public, and keep neat and precise field data) or who possess or are in pursuit of a
related degree in biological sciences may be given preference. Requires a flexible work
schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily
each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily
basis, but not necessarily each day. This includes working at all hours and workdays in
excess of eight hours or 40 hours per week when necessary. This job will require
working outside with variable weather, possible camping and include lifting equipment up
to 40 pounds, walking on slippery terrain, and working on a boat.
