    you cant stop a tuna

i was out tuna fishing listening to my radio with other fishermen saying they lost the fish they could stop them from striping them on 50 reels that shouldnt happen with these fish on 50 reels. you can take tuna 81'' and bigger wich is considerd a giant.sounds like they may have hooked one. things i do as the operator of the boat will determan weather we catch the fish or not.first thing i do is see what way the fish is running.then start clearing my lines, if there is just me and the guy on the rod.i only troll 3 rods.it's much easyer to take two rods in than four or five.remeber i want to start fighting that fish as soon as i can.ok your iam ready to start the fight from my stern.if the fish i hooked is riping line,to get some back i never back down you cant back down fast enough!turn your boat and start chaseing him.keep the fish
parralel to your boat.the rod man must talk to you and let you know what going on if he wants more speed or not .you allways want tention on the line.ive had my boat going 11nots after a gaint all the time the rod man had proper tension on the line.once you get enough line back turn your stern back to the fish.start the battle.but thats how i dont get striped i looses them a million other ways never that way at least not yet.lol

Good advise Capt. I seem to be hearing alot of that too. The other classic I have heard this season too many times is guys fighting a fish for an hour or more only to get the fish to the boat and loose it because their harpoon wasn't set up or the lack there off a harpoon.

hollow core backing really helps to add capacity. Not speaking from experience, I'm not that good a fisherman, but I would think you should turn the boat quickly and chase and if you cant get the whole spread in the boat in time so what? Crank the drags down on the other reels and go. Worry about them once the fish is under control and not about to dump you.

    Spooled

My only experience in turning the boat was 5 or 6 years ago. We were down in The Dump and hooked up to something big on a Penn 114w. We spun my uncle's 30 Fortier and chased it down. I saw the chrome spool three times. The star drag burned my thumb.

We never saw the fish. It broke us off on the running gear. If I had been a better angler it would not have happened. But these are the things you learn from.

If you can run a fish down in a down east hull, a faster boat should be able to do it.

there certainly isnt any reason to get spooled on a 50 on stellwagen.... we caugh over ten fish last year on a 50 that was spooled with 80 right to the pin and never got closer than a 1/4 spool.... i did go out and respool all of our 50's with 450 yds of JB backing and 75 yds of 80 momoi top shots... now i dont care what bites......

we also fish about 25# at strike.... we troll with the drags back at about 18-20 and bump them as soon as it starts taking line.... the key with BFT is to break there will...and never let them put their head back down if you can help it...

Those are some good points Don. With some of the stories flying around this season I wonder if guys are even setting there drags. Hearing about a 65" fish dumping an 80w really makes you wonder if people even know what their reels are set at at strike.
