The YFT Nite Bite Goes off BIG
Sorry for the late report. I had to spend some quality time with the Missus after back to back canyon trips, including a very fast run to Oceanographer with Thynnus on his 31 contender
Thanks Dan! The was whicked!
Fished the tri-state last week aboard "Glue Me". Weather played a factor for this one and we opted to take Day 1 as our lay day instead of pounding thru a head see on the way out. The forecasts for Day 2-3 was FAC turning W/NW to 20 kts which pretty much ruled out heading for the eastern canyons and we quickly zeroed in on the water hitting the "150" on the west wall of Hudson Canyon.

The troll was slower than a herd of turtles stampeding through molassas. And the bait from Fishtails to the Hudson was non-existent. But the sonar lit up once we hit the 100 square and it was lines in.
Looks like a little like Bullwinkle

It got really fishy when we hit the west wall. We trolled around birds, dolphin, finbacks and great whale feeds, everything you could think of without a sniff. Everyone was speechless as the sun set. With the non-exstient nite bite we've had, I'm sure we were all thinking the same thing - Where's my sleeping bag and pillow. But we went thru the paces switching over for the night chunk. While we were dropping the 2nd sword rig, the first sword rig went off. Shortly after, color and the 1st yellowfin hit the deck on a line set at 250'.
And then it began...
It was non-stop from there. Doubles. Triples. Flat lines. Drop lines. Jigs. We were covered up. It started around 21:30 and went on right thru daybreak. Here's a shot of the sonar under the boat. It looked like this all night!

At daybreak it was still going off. Fish were snatching up baits off the transom. We would have never left that bite if it weren't for the tournament. It was perfect flyrod canyon fishing conditions!
It was the best night bite I think I've seen in the in the 5 years I've been canyon fishing. And I've seen some good ones. I hate to say the "E" word, but it was....EPIC. We quickly aproached our limit of 16 (3 pp/boat). We kept 2 slots open for the money fish and continued catch and release thru the night. It was mostly doubles and triples with most coming on jigs. We lost count. I can't honestly say how many we hooked. But I found a video with the count at "52" and it was still dark and the bite continued. Plus we snapped more than a few off in the mele.

While we didn't win any coin. It was one one of the best fishing trips I have ever witnessed. There were 5 or 6 boats within 1-2 miles of us, including the Canyon Runner boys (top notch fishermen). As best as we could tell, other boats picked off maybe 5 or 6 overnite. Same water. Same location. It just goes to show you, sometimes it's better to lucky than good.
I have tons of video including underwater footage. I'll put some together shortly.

Women love me... fish fear me
Nice to see a mid ninties like bite.......those were the days, running to the grounds and doing VERY little trolling, setting up on the chunk and having them try and swim into the scuppers......limiting out by 2 am and drifiting for a mako and sword kicker.....great report and a night that takes me back a good 15 years.
