Great Work guys, yellows on poppers in the canyons is about as good as it gets. I think we got a small eyeball a few years ago at Fishtails on a charter with Riptide, but we couldn't tell cause it looked so similar to the yellowfins. It did have striations all over its liver, so I think it was a bigeye. I will post pics when I get home, congrats on a great trip.

100% certain it was not a bluefin. It was either a yellowfin or a bigeye. very long pectorals and the meat was clearly not bluefin. i have some other shots of it from a slightly different angle and you can see the length of the pectoral fins.

Keith - Cutter here. Your report got me onto this site - thanks. we caught almost exactly the same fish last year. It took me looking at the pics to figure out it was a bigeye instead of a Yellow. Great trip!

So we did get an eyeball spincasting. not bad.
Curious how it's ID'd from a pic? I thought the liver was the only for sure way other than markings which it has and slight fin differences. Nice fish either way!

    That's a good guide:

For bluefin pectoral fin length: "Very short: does not reach origin of second dorsal fin"

For bigeye pectoral fin length: "Reaches origin of second dorsal fin"

If you look at the picture you can see where the pectoral fin would sit against the body when not extended and it clearly reaches the dorsal. So clearly not bluefin- yellowfin is a bit tougher for me to distinguish...

Cutter, welcome aboard man! This is a great site filled with good guys that like offshore fishing...
