    wildcat groundfishing

So, I may go to wildcat to go groundfishing/tuna fishing saturday or sunday. I love it out there and often run into fish before I get there. I have never groundfished out there, just tuna/shark. I'm wondering if anyone could tell me what to expect for groundfishing there this time of year and what depths should be most productive this time of year.

Not looking for secret spots, just general info, especially if I'm wasting my time going there for groundfish this time of year.

feel free to PM me if you have info you'd rather share privately, I'll report back as to how it went.

    thanks!

You are driving over miles of good groundfish bottom on your way out there. I would imagine if you drop a jig on any structure east of the bank right now that it would be automatic. Seems foolish to steam all the way to wildcat.

I've done very well out there this time of year years past. Where are you heading out of? There are a few spots east of the Bank, on the 30 fathom line, near the lanes heading toward WCK that are rocky and hold fish.

thanks for the advice guys, its greatly appreciated.

I know I don't have to go that far, but I love making at least 1 trip a year out there. we will stop along the way east of the bank too and if we hit em good we may not make it all the way there. I just love that place. we always seem to have something cool happen.

i made it out the way a few weeks back, but for sharks. 3 bluedogs. however, i did bring fresh clams, assorted color teasers and plenty of weight. everytime i dropped, a bluedog came into the slick and had to real up. Soo...i can't offer any further insight on the bottom fishery, but when i posted/asked questions about fishing wildcat a few weeks back, i was told it was a great fishery for bottom fish and to def fish the bottom while i was sharking. only problem, not so great at multi-tasking on that trip. good luck.

    what's the word?

bankrat, did you make the trip, any report? I was thinking of doing a cod trip Thursday or Friday until I looked at the marine forecast…. 5 to 7 footers thru Saturday.

headed that way sunday, stopped when we saw a few tuna splash along the way. stayed tuna fishing the rest of the day, got a few tuna instead. all were small, biggest was 49", all others were low to mid 40" range.

wildcat will have to wait, but I do have plenty of pink curlies...
