If I remember it correctly, it was the first fish of the year caught in Japanese waters. It was more of a "novelty" thing than a "market value" fish. I think the price was around $370k. Each resturaunt in Japan who wanted to sell that one particular fish paid a huge price for "the first of the year." The second fish went for a fraction of that. But of course everyone only remembers the price and not the whole story.

P.S. This is based on my faulty memory, so if someone wants to research it some more thoroughly, they can get the facts more accurate. But I have the general story right.

That big money fish each year is a total marketing gimmick. Each year a couple of sushi restaurants- one in Japan and one in Hong Kong- ceremoniously bid up a single fish up to an enormous value to help market sashimi. It has nothing to do with the reality of the markets and has everything to do with creating a buzz around the new year. Very unfortunate to see that guy saying it like that since it will only help add fuel to the fire since the enviros like to use that single fish to try and convince the general public that bluefin are being driven to extinction since they are worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. The best I heard of all season this year was one fish for around $40/pound, but that was an outlier and the average was probably around $10/pound. There were a lot of decent number of fish getting in the teens and some in the low twenties due to the strong yen/weak dollar, but again those are the gems and are still a tiny, tiny fraction of that one ceremonial buy each year. Last thing we need is for any of us in the fishery to be helping make the public believe the lies being told in the media about the value of bluefin, so make sure you correct anyone and everyone you hear saying bluefin are worth half a million!

Not sure if it's 100% true but it's what I was told by a few people.

One would think that if you are exchanging your trips at no cost, you should be submitting 1099's to the production company for the full value of your trips. It amounts to income for them, and they should account for it.

It also documents your costs, so you should be able to deduct them.
