When there is no fishing there are my dogs.
Ok so fishing season is pretty much over for me. So this is the time of year my spare time turns to my second passion. My dogs.
So I figured I would see how many others have a love of our canine companions as I do.
let’s see your canine family member/s and hear their stories.
Here are mine.
Curtis and Zoe. Affectionately known as “The Kids” If we are out in the yard and I yell "Come on Kids" they both come running like i rang the dinner bell.
Curtis is a male brindle APT/Boxer mix. His nic name is "Squirrel"
He got his nic name because when i first got him if you said the word “squirrel” he would stop in his tracks and look for it. (Ya just like in the pixar movie)
Zoe is a female blue APT (American Pitbull Terrier) her Nic Name is "Doodles" Go ahead Fred Laugh it up My daughter nic named her. Besides Doodles is just as cute as hell.
Both are rescues. And here are their stories
Curtis had 5 homes and 3 names in the first half of his life. We recently found out some of Curtis’s life history, thanks to my wife’s Facebook addiction. He had a pretty rough puppyhood.
His first owner/breeder was going to have him destroyed when he was a puppy because he was the runt of the litter and he could not sell him. This so called “breeder” was a drug addict and was running a puppy mill to help support his habit.
His second owner took him from the 1st owner/breeder so he would not be destroyed. This kid also had a drug problem.
His third owner got him as a favor to the 2nd owner who had become homeless. The 2nd owner gave Curtis to the third owner to watch over until he got back on his feet. This “Friend” 3rd owner ended up giving the dog away (to the 4rd owner) after 6 months, and told the 2nd owner the dog ran away.
I got him in Oct of 2008 from the 4th owner when I got this pic from a dog network friend of mine, saying the family has had him for over a year but could not keep him any longer because one family member was very Allergic.
I went out to see the dog and it was like we were best friends immediately. The family I got Curtis from were good people. They treated Curtis really well and we still keep in touch with them updating them on how Curtis is doing.
Curtis had a few issues when I first got him. Most were trust related (understandably). Curtis did not do well with other dogs, he would not let you near him when he ate, he would not let you touch his feet, or let you under his chin (like giving him a hug) and he would not let you give him a bath. The first year we had him he needed to be muzzled when he went to the vet.
Today he is a different dog. He will let you cut his nails any time and will give a paw so you can. I can now literally put my face in his bowl when he eats with on reaction at all from him, he loves big hugs from his ole Dad (that’s me) and he loves the water and getting a bath. He loves the water and to swim but is not real good at it. We viset the vet once a month as part of his continued social training and he even nuzzles vets and the vet tech's (He likes the ladies). He has not seen a muzzle in over 2 years and from what I am seeing he will never see one again. He even get along with other dogs including Capt Chris's (Hoppa Drives the boat) little french bulldog lilly. If there is one thing curtis still has a problem with it is boats. I can not get him on a boat without him freaking out.
Not sure what the original owner /Breeder was looking for in size but Curtis is a healthy 63 lbs dog. He will be 6 years old this saturday and will be with me for the rest of his life. He is the smartest most loyal, lovable dogI have ever had.
Zoe is also a rescue but from a breeder that should not have bred her female APT.
Zoe could not be sold. She is a pure Bred registered American Pitbull Terrier Her color is commonly known as a “Blue” Or “Blue Nose” the official color name is actually called “dilute black” She is Grey. She was the only pup of 17 in 2 litters from the same parents to have a birth defect. She was also the runt of her litter. What kept Zoe from being sold was a severe malocclusion (overbite). Her bottom jaw is a lot shorter then her top jaw. So much that when she closes her mouth her bottom lip is well behind and inside her top front teeth. This is a genetic condition that required some dentistry. We needed to adjust either the location or the size of her lower canine teeth.
Because her lower jaw was so short and narrow her lower canines were piercing deep indents into her pallet and as she grew it would get worce. Her lower canines needed to be shortened or moved so they did not pierce through her pallet creating holes from her pallet into her sinuses. We chose the shorting. Doggy braces are very expensive and my daughter already used up all money in the braces fund I had )
We chose Zoe because my wife wanted a blue nose APT. Zoe's birth defect gave her a certain cuteness and we had no intention on breeding her anyway, so she would be spayed. However it was Curtis that made the final decision. Curtis fell in love with Zoe the moment they met at the breeders house the day we went to see Zoe for the first time. From the very first second they met they have been inseparable. Getting a second dog was a family affair and Curtis had an equal say in the matter.
As for her dentistry. She is no worse for the ware and outside of looking a little different because her bottom jaw is so short she is an otherwise happy and normal dog that needs no special treatment or attention. She can eat anything just like a regular dog and she does.
We keep saying we do not think she knows she is a pitbull. She is a very submissive dog and even as a puppy has not even so much as nipped anyone. If you try to put your fingers in her mouth she tries to spit them out. If she has a toy in her mouth and you ask for it she will give it up instantly. She is a bit of a chewer so dog toys are plentiful in my house. That is both her breed and her age.
Every stereo typical stigmatism you hear about “Pitbulls “ being mean, vicious, unpredictable, etc. They are the exact opposite of what I see every day in Zoe. She is a very good, lovable, gentle, playful, good dog who only want to be loved and make you happy.
We got Zoe at 16 weeks old she was born on July 5th 2010
Zoe is almost 1 ½ years old, and around 55 lbs and just the biggest love bug you ever saw. We call her our mini pitty cuz she is such a peanut.
Zoe and Curtis are the best of friends. They are almost 5 years apart in age but will eat out of the same dish and drink out of the same bowl, and sleep in the same bed without issue.
I Wake up every morning with 2 pitbulls 1 of 50lbs and 1 of 60lbs staring me in the face. Butts wiggling so hard half their bodys shake. And I would not trade it for anything.
When I get home from work they both greet me at the door like they have not seem me in years.
Pure unconditional love.
