what happens to the fish that spool our lines?

a significant fraction of large game fish that get hooked are not landed (tuna, shark, etc.); many spool the line and that's the end of that.

what do you suppose becomes of these fish? I'm guessing it's got to be a miserable way to go, dragging 500+ yds of mono or braid around while trying to feed and chase bait fish. some of that line probably gets hung up on obstacles and broken shorter, but that's probably a very small percentage. it clearly doesn't decompose in the fish's lifetime. and if you're one who believes the hooks eventually "rust out," that's got to take many weeks or months

    what say you pro's? thanks!

no joke - a legitimate curiousity. a lot of people claim they've caught a previously hooked fish at some point, with hook still embedded. I've never encountered this in a lifetime of (moderate) fishing. I'm wondering if anyone ever landed a fish with any appreciable amount of line still in tow.

it'd be nice to know if every spooled fish is not necessarily a dead fish

maybe not. but lines do break, all the time.

so let me mod this question slightly before you guys start flaming me over this: whether its a hundred feet or a whole spool's worth of line out before it snaps, is there any evidence of a hooked fish surviving it?

    Mate/student i think
if you talking about billfish with fast rusting circle hooks i think they would survive. as for sharks unless the stupid thing gets wrapped up in it, i think the hook rust out and falls out. tunas who cares. i think for the most part the hook eventually falls out. if i were ever to get spooled i honestly wouldnt care

Don't want this topic to go on any further, BUT,Just to satisfy your curiusity....I HAVE caught tuna that have line in them,,,,,means fish survive....think it's time for you to upgrade your gear.

    now stop this stupid thread.
