There really hasn't been much tuna discussion here lately, has there?

And like many others here I have been busy doing boatyard work every day, getting home tired, havn't really seen any threads to comment on.

No one here has posted about the Canadian science calling for endangered pecies status for Bluefin. Didn't Canada lobby for increased quota at the last ICCAT meeting?

Whats the status of the US ESA petition? I thought we would have heard something by now...

I see my essay on the Libyan Bluefin fisheries was quite prophetic. Seine season began in the Mediterranean Sea yesterday. I'm curious to see what catches are going to be like there, and if the French and Spanish vessels will be able to procure stock in the Balearic Sea or will be forced to deal with the eco-terrorists in the Gulf of Sidra. There seemed to be more smaller Bluefin around in Europe. Earlier this Spring some of the traditional pre-spawn fisheries in the Northern Med produced better then in recent seasons. Perhaps this is an indication that the eastern stock is rebounding as well.

I hope my Japan market predictions are less prophetic! There were some surprisingly high prices for wild Greek Bluefin at Tsukiji last month., and a couple high prices were paid for Aomori Giants. But Japan prices have been rather low (both for imported and domestic tuna) since the earthquake/tsunami, in spite of minimal supplies. Since rolling blackouts were ceased in Tokyo, the price for farmed Bluefin has stabilized there somewhat. On a more positive note, tuna is very short in the US right now, perhaps the US domestic Bluefin market will remain firm in spite of the foolish boycott attempts here.
