Yeah it was crazy! Luckily no one was hurt. I know that these guys rely on this to make a living, but over Codfish? Thats a little nuts.
Haven't heard this story yet.....
what happened?
2 head boats (Ill keep the names out I guess) were on whaleback in the midst of the chaos. they were next to each other in a bow to bow way when one of them went to back out (at about ten knots) and he got the other boats pulpit and anchor near his port side rail and raked the anchor and pulpit down the forward half of the rail. gaffs went flying, people hit the deck, I heard a few roads snap in half, one gaff went up in the air and landed in the drink, jigs were swinging around like wrecking balls. it was insanity.
I don't care how hot the bite is up there, they can have it.
I guess it's a good thing the inshore cod bite doesn't always last this long.....Seems like when you have that many boats in that small an area for a month plus something's bound to happen.
"Bristol Bay" cod wars NH style![]()
I feel as though that picture could have been taken moments prior to said incident, the two boats involved are there and in position
I'm the mate on the light blue boat in that picture (and on occasion the black one as well). They aren't quite in the order that it happened, but the boats are there. This whole year has been full of nonsense like this.
These guys are all excellent skippers and great guys, but the competition between them is creating a ton of tension between the boats. Even last summer, there were problems between boats where guys were casting jigs at other boats and tangling each others lines (and this was out on Jeffery's!). Ego's are getting a little out of control, and its hurting business for some of these guys. No one wants to fish with
Today was our last day in the mud, and I couldn't be more happy to be done with that crap.
