Whale Wars Boats take on Illegal Tuna Fishing in Med.

Not usually behind this type of stuff, but this makes me want to donate. Embarassing that they were able to locate unlicensed boats fishing and likely boats grossly exceeding quotas on day 1. Where's ICAAT?

In my experience, this isn't the right place to find sympathy for the Whale Wars folks. Hard to understand; this is a sportfishing website, you'd think folks here would support anyone who fights people raping the ocean. Go figure...........

On the other hand, it's amazing that they were able to stop whaling (at least for this year) in the Southern Ocean. What devotion!! You won't find many people willing to lay their very lives on the line to help creatures that can't stop the onslaught themselves. I admire the $hit out of those guys, and have donated.

You might want to take the time to perform a little due diligence before donating money to an eco terrorist organization.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society are a bunch of terrorists and Paul Watson is a pirate. Sea Shepherd claims they are only targeting poachers, but the truth is that they make no distinction between lawful ICCAT compliant operations and illegal fishing. Their only agenda is to disrupt tuna fishing and liberate Bluefin from feeding cages and transfer pens, regardless of whether the tuna were illegally captured or not.

The incident that you are referring to occured June 6 on the Melita Bank, in international waters more than 70 miles from the Libyan coast. The facts are that inflatables launched by the m/v Steve Irwin and m/v Brigitte Bardot attempted to sabotage the nets of the Tunisian flagged f/v Tapus (an ICCAT compliant tuna seiner), and liberate 113 MT of lawfully harvested Bluefin from a transfer cage being towed by the Hergla III (an ICCAT documented towing vessel).

The f/v Tapus, f/v Tijani and other Tunisian seiners that were attacked by The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society last week were all compliant with ICCAT. They were being tracked by ICCAT and by ICCAT/EU-CFCA vessels in the area, had ICCAT observers on board, and had lawfully harvested tuna within the 853 MT quota ICCAT has set for Tunisia.

By all means, go ahead and donate money to these publicity seeking criminals. It's only a matter of time before they begin harassing American commercials and attempting to disrupt tuna fishing on Stellwagen, in Cape Cod Bay and out at Georges...

The organization that does absolutely nothing to stop the raping of the bluefin population overseas.

The SS organization may be what you say but they did more in trying to stop what goes on there than anyone else has. The Libyan's are so well known for their eco and human rights standings....I'd definitely take their side.

They'd never touch the American tuna fisherman. We're about the only ones playing by the rules.

You got that right!!! Someone messes w/me fishing legally, they're gonna see some sub-sonic lead headed in their direction. People who don't like HOW they do what they do should go over there and try it their own way. As you say, they are the only ones actually doing anything to stop it.

If they were messing with legitimate operators, they'd get sunk in short order. Anyone who doesn't see this is deluding themselves. I think it's in our best interest as sportfishermen and lovers of the ocean to support the Whale Wars organization: they are doing what we should be doing. If they step over the line and mess with legal fishermen, then they feel the heat. Until then, they have my support.

Indeed. However the vessels that the Sea Shepard Society attacked last week were Tunisian and this incident did not occur in Libyan waters.

What makes you so sure of this?

Do you actually think Paul Watson bothers determining if Mediterranean seiners are "playing by the rules" or even cares? The tunas in the transfer cage that Sea Shepard attmpted to sabotage were lawfully captured by ICCAT compliant vessels that were being monitored by ICCAT and CFCA.

By your logic you should be boycotting restaurants that serve Bluefin Tuna...

You say these vessels were ICCAT compliant:
I didn't see that in the linked article....in fact, it said the opposite. Can you provide a link from your source?

I realize that we don't need more political pressure against fishing. Especially here, where we have some tough laws and enforcement. But don't you think we need to get behind conservation and/or enforcement?

"By your logic you should be boycotting restaurants that serve Bluefin Tuna..."
Why on earth would anyone boycott legally harvested seafood? I don't see where you made your leap of logic....makes no sense. We're talking about taking action which would tend to lessen the call for boycotting Blue Fin; if the public sees the stocks being defended, maybe some of the loonies would relax. Which side do we want to be on/perceived to be on? Standing with those who would protect the stocks and rebuild the fisheries, or standing with those who would profit NOW, damn what the future brings for the fish? Which are you for?

If WE stand for the fish, we stand some small chance of preventing privatization. i.e. ITQ/IFQs. Then the stocks would rebound, but we would be locked out. F__k that!!!!!
