Ryan and I were the first to arrive and started things out on Thursday around 4pm. The winds were blowing a stiff 20+ from the SW, with gusts much higher. The Rock, as we call it, had big surf and crashing around from all sides. Inbetween The Rock and the 2nd jetty, the incoming tide and the outside rocks as a barrier, created a nice pool to begin casting to. I made the mistake of respooling with 20lb mono. **Lesson learned, time to put a top shot of braid on my surf rods!!!**
Ryan is fishing The Rock using a 9" Slug-Go, i'm fishing the Jetty to the right, using a 2 3/4oz Gibbs pencil (didn't have bigger at this point). Within a few casts of figuring out how to best cast in these conditions, and how to land my lure in the particular spot without landing in mung, i had my first hit. i went to set the hook, and missed. too much slack. retrieve faster. Now that i'm able to adjust for these conditions, i started catching fish. The fish were hitting seconds after my plug hit the water. Stripers attcking with such force, they are literally clear out of the water!!! I'm tight with my first and soon land a nice 33" striper. First keeper of the year, first fish of the year!!!YAHOO!!! Fish released, fishing commences. Bammn!! another cast, another 33" landed and released. Few more casts, a few missed fish (i have to be honest here, it's rare i'm fishing in these head on winds, so my technique is far from pretty). it's around 515 now and I'm now 4 for 4, after releasing a 30"er with about 3 missed fish. I'm tight with #5 when after 10 minutes, fish pops off. Oh well, I'm still having an absolute blast!!! Fish are attacking my plug with a vengence!! The bite is on!! This is great!! I change plugs to a heavier, grey colored Gibbs to see if all these expensive lures i've collected over the years actually work. haha!!
Ryan joins me on the jetty, switching over to a mack colored popper. his first cast, he's tight with soon to be released 30"er. I'm casting over him, reaching the outter parts of this "pool" when i get hit again. I've got the fish about 20' from me when ryan hooks up. Double header. I mean, is this really happening?! ryan is now 2-2, i'm 5-6 after just releasing a the smallest fish of the day, a 28"er. I lose another after a 15 minute battle which brings me 5-7. The winds are picking up and i'm having some trouble getting tight after casting as i keep missing hits. Frustrating to say the least!! I'm tight again with another 28" and decide to keep this for dinner tonight. 6-8. Ryan comes tight with another 30"er, but runs into issues with the release as the hook is deep. He cuts line and brings the fish to the beach to work...this soon turns out to be another for the table. I start kicking myself for taking mine just moments earlier. I'm back on jetty, changing my gibbs to a blue. A couple missed and then an explosion!! I'm tight to the biggest fish so far. it starts running right, then left, then right, which brings me off the jetty onto the beach. I'm waste deep, in mung, when i get a look at my biggest of the day...I grab the leader and have a respectable 37 1/2" striper, which is still very lively and still very annoyed that he has a hook in its mouth. Released, it swims to live another day.
I'm soaking wet. it's around 7 now. We hear the rest of our crew watching from above. I'm 7-9 with 2x @ 28", 30", 3x 33" and a 37 1/2. I haven't had a hit in little while now, as the tide isn't much moving any longer. I call it and head up to the house.
The rest of wknd wasn't nearly as exciting as thursday, but many more fish were caught. the bite from surf was def on!!! Plastics, swimmers, surface were all working. I changed up colors and found them all to work. Bigger was def better in these condiditons. At night, SlugGos worked best for me...the only problem was the mung...getting past the mung, you had a very short retrieve before getting hung up. My biggest fish at night was one 34"er, a 30" and some high 20's. Most of the fish were thin, but very hungry!!!
Heading back down this upcoming wknd, leaving from the Bass River, this time working the shore from boat....
