I would not worry about the naysayer. You did exactly what you needed to do and then some. For your husband to be able to splice your line to a bigger setup mid fight is nothing short of amazing and not lose the fish in the mean time is also very lucky. You didn't do anything wrong PERIOD! Just bad luck.
I took a 68" 190 lber. on Tuesday on a Saragosa 18000 mated to an OTI Tuna Sniper rod that was the balls to fight the fish with. Had it decked in 15 min. flat timed! The Saragosa giving up I think is just bad luck, there are a lot of guy's using that reel for multiple fish without issue me being one of them.
In my opinion the Trevala's are too small for these fish. I had a friend do a 48" fish 2 years ago on a Trevala and it was seriously undergunned. The only thing I would do is get a bigger rod designed for fish this size. There are a ton of options out there. OTI makes several rods specifically for these size fish and would be great for your Saragosa once it is repaired. You should upgrade the drag washers on the Saragosa to Carbontex which you can get from Smooth Drag.com. Don't let it get to you just keep at it and you will score. Great story though and one you will remember for a long time. I wish I could get my wife back out on the water she would love this stuff.

you kow, one of the reasons that this site is as good as it is is because it's not full of a bunch of a-hole better that thou salt licks who denigrate less experience people asking legitimate questions but who are just as enthusiastic about offshore fishing as captains of charter boats.
Is that a run on sentence? Sorry . . .
Hi Red Herring,
Hey where the heck is Hopkinron, NH. Could not locate it on a map and since I am from Bedford I thought you may want to hook up some time, especially if your from Hopkinton which is not too far away. My sentences always run on, I have no clue what sentence structure is supposed to be, that is why I becam an injineer, cause I can't write.
nice work but a tough ending... thats tuna fishing for you....
saragos should have been up to the job?!! the MH trevala is a bit lite in my opinion. go to the xxh and even those might not be much good by August.
i believe in the right gear for the fight but i dont think that you were completely out of line with the setup
shark,
sent you a pm.
Not to steal the thread but we're taking equipment so I figured I'd ask. I've only been out for tuna 4 times and am going this weekend again. Up until now we've been trolling a pair of 50s and a pair of senators. I've read about people using spinners so I picked up a Penn 950ssm and an ugly stick BWS 1102. I put 50lb on the Penn. I know I could hit some fish and be out gunned but will this do for the majority of what I'll see in CCB, SWC, and PHB?
nice troll; lures positioned well in the spread and there is that single lone straggler waaay waaaay back.
What makes you say this is spam? Just because it's my first post? Nice to know you're willing to offer advice.
If anyone else could offer some advice I'd appreciate it, obviously SteelieDan is too good for me. I apologize for being new to the Tuna game but how else am I going to learn if I don't ask. I'm sure Dan just went out one day and started catching giants right away but I don't have his intuition so I need some advice.
