Maritime23: I appreciate your warning regarding Stellwagen, but if you check out the pics, and you have done much tuna fishing in these areas, you can figure out where we were. The striper idea was legit.

Muzzysix: I respectfully asked a few questions of the more experienced which you apparently count yourself among. Instead of ranting about a post made by someone you do not know personally, why not contribute to the general knowledge and give us your expert opinion regarding what should be used to target these fish. What I love the most about these boards is the chance to keep learning about a sport I love. I wrote the post to contribute to a group who has been so generous in teaching me, hopefully adding our little experience to the knowledge of the whole.

To the rest of you, thank you for your comments.

Less common to hook a BFT when striper fishing then vice versa.......keep doing what you're doing......o/w you'll be over-geared 90% of the time and not having fun......JMVHO.

Wow! Great story....must have been a thrill. Too bad about the seize-up, you could have landed that fish with some luck. I have a Penn 704Z that I have 65 lb braid on. It would still be fun for bass, and, you could tangle with something much bigger too.

I f I don't have anything good to say after reading a post here, I simply do not reply. If people start getting a hassle every time they ask a question, soon no one will want to ask a question. I remember a big brouhaha last winter because new or less experienced people were getting pummeled by others. Let's try to keep this site a place where people can ask questions without any sarcasm or disapproval.

I've had tuna hooked twice on my boat while cod jigging once on a venerable Senator 6/0 with ye olde 50# dacron. It turned out to be at least a 6' fish probably more - the angler fought it for 3 hours and *I* lost it by missing a shift and putting it in the props.

Ever since then we only cod jig with 130's to be safe.

Just joking - you did just fine and the splice to a 50 was a really smart idea.

Oh yeah - 2 years ago on Crab Ledge in 90' of water in Nov we hooked what was probably a large fish amidst a school of 50" fish we were doing just fine with on 30's and 50's. We lost it in the pot line.

Ever since then I use an electric reel and glass covered line to be safe.

    Just joking.

In both cases we did the best we could under the circmstances and enjoyed both the moment and as importantly - the memory of the moment.

Continue your daily activities as is

Great read, thanks for sharing. I think you are going to remember this fish a lot longer then if you landed it. It should make for a good story in 20 years. Best of luck next time out.......

What a dick you must be to respond negatively to this thread muzzysix........does it really sound to you like they need to change their gear?

What Pro Tuna Team do you belong to anyway?

    Lucky Duck,

I was not trying to hammer you for trying to pick up a few fresh fish for the dinner table. Really didn't look at the picture close enough to actually see where you were, when I did I know exactly where you were fishing. Please accept my apology, and as I said earlier kudo's to you and your husband on the fast thinking, Better luck next time

I know Maritime 23. Sorry if my reply sounded otherwise. My brother is also a firefighter. I know better than to insult one of the brotherhood!
