left Sunday at noon, but got delayed on way out. we found a floating log real close. i think it was maybe 6-8 miles from Newport. had a bunch of nice mahi. decided to play with my new spearguns. long story short, we shot a few and had so much fun we pot hopped on way out.
we should have been at edge by 230, but instead got there at 630 pm after shooting a bunch of mahi in Newport and further in the lanes. found whales and dolphins and lots of boats working. we trolled til dark without a touch. radio said a few people caught a few small yellows. set up for night chunk. did not see one tuna or even a mahi. nothing on our chunk baits. we had one huge runoff on the sword bait. i guess it could have been a sword, or maybe a manta as there were plenty around. it dumped half an Avet 50w at full drag before it let go. squid bait was missing head but otherwise perfect. had a hammerhead in our slick for awhile, but didnt bother baiting it. just watched it. that was it for the night. radio chatter sounded similar. i dont think anybody did much of anything. it was FAC Sunday and Sunday night.
There was a huge lightning storm coming from LIS. we watched the lightning show all night, but thankfully in the morning it passed south of us and we had overnighted in 1000 ft.
at first light we trolled into deep. we had a double of small yft, but keeper sized. then we had a long distance release on a white. then one more small yellow. we found the fish in 75ish degree water in 1300 feet. a 26 ft. regulator "Mojo" was there working the fish with us, and a big sportie. both were hooking up. by then, wind picked up. it got real sloppy very quickly. decided to go home. i don't know what the seas were, but we still managed to run home at 37-41 mph. i was dry behind the console, but my friends on beanbags ion the cockpit said it was like chinese water torture and they got soaked. i didn't care. we ran 100 miles in 2.5 hrs and didn't pound once. there were definitely a few real 5 ft'ers in that slop. that would have been 4+ hrs of pain on my old boat. the yellowfin is a beast.
