Finished up nice dude! Pretty tough to make a 10 min vid out of 12 hrs of footage. Nice job!
way to rock there cap...
what are the rigger clips doin on the rods ?
Bryan might be able to explain this better, since he was fishing up there, but the rigger clips are on the rod because of the tuna bomb. The tuna bomb is taped to the rod, and the line goes down through the tuna bomb, through the rigger clip and out to a balloon bait, etc. This allows the line to hook around a smooth surface instead of the edge of the plastic on the tuna bomb. Fish hits...clip pops....tuna bomb is ripped off the rod and slides down into the fishes mouth to prevent chafing on the leader. If you pause the video, while the camera is pointed at the rod you can see how it works. Make sense? Pretty nifty. We have changed our rod setups for live bait/chunking on the Fortuna because of what we learned up north.

i gotchya with the bomb.. but am wondering how it makes it over the balloon if it doesnt pop.. great idea though
the way we have been rigging the bait rods on the fortuna now that the bombs are on the rods is as follows. The main line runs through the tuna bomb that is then taped with one wrap at the top of the bomb and one wrap at the bottom, two inches below that is the rigger clip that the main line runs through, this way all your reeling and setting can be done with the tuna bomb left in place. once your bait is set to the desired depth we have fooled around with three methods of balloon attachment. one was using a rubber band and that pretty much sucked, the second method was tying the balloon right on the main line expecting the balloon to pop as it usually does so the bomb can slide, this worked all to well today when the fish broke off and our tuna bomb slid past the balloon to the bottom. The third method and probably the best way to go is to pinch about a four inch section in the main line and tie the balloon around both pieces of line so that when it comes tight the loop pulls straight and the balloon floats off. its a little tricky to explain but a super simple concept once you see it done. bry may have better advice on this because he was there, this is all second hand knowledge from me.
Nice video, looks like it was a hell of a time fishing up there. I hope to make the trip up next year.....
As Corey said above, the balloon issue is solved by tying the balloon direct (or with a rubber band) to a small bite in the top shot so it pops off when you come tight.
The weight is attached above the leader with a small rubber band. We were using 20oz+ bank sinkers up there, or several egg sinkers inside of a deflated balloon. With the amount of lead that we/they are fishing, it breaks away 99.9% of the time. As for if it doesn't....not really sure what to do.
A lot of times when fighting the fish, the bomb won't slide down all the way because of the drag against it in the water and the angle of the line (this happened to us on our fish). If that happens, these guys throttle up and come right over the fish to get the line more vertical.
Another thing that I like about the bomb now is, it puts additional pressure on the hook; kind of like a squid bar. As the fish is swimming, etc, the weight and extra water drag on the bomb keeps the hook pressure applied more efficiently...or so my mind tells me.

First off, congrats guys on a fantastic trip north to our Canadian friends, what a backyard they have....
For a guy who typically doesnt have time to sit down and watch internet stuff till mid winter, I must say I took the time to watch the entire video from start to finish last night, and even rewound it several times, fascinated by numerous things in your video. I was smiling and laughing out loud listening to the obvious joy and amazement your crew was having the calm day you were feeding them with no killing going on....outstanding job on the video, one of the best I have seen journaling an epic trip a while. Thanks for the fish p orn and sharing your experiences.
PEI or bust for me in Sept. 2011, strapping in with an 80 stand up for a Canadian dinosaur, no tiny gear for those fish!!
