As Corey said above, the balloon issue is solved by tying the balloon direct (or with a rubber band) to a small bite in the top shot so it pops off when you come tight.
The weight is attached above the leader with a small rubber band. We were using 20oz+ bank sinkers up there, or several egg sinkers inside of a deflated balloon. With the amount of lead that we/they are fishing, it breaks away 99.9% of the time. As for if it doesn't....not really sure what to do.
A lot of times when fighting the fish, the bomb won't slide down all the way because of the drag against it in the water and the angle of the line (this happened to us on our fish). If that happens, these guys throttle up and come right over the fish to get the line more vertical.
Another thing that I like about the bomb now is, it puts additional pressure on the hook; kind of like a squid bar. As the fish is swimming, etc, the weight and extra water drag on the bomb keeps the hook pressure applied more efficiently...or so my mind tells me.
