    Video cameras?

    Time to upgrade from my 5 Y.O. 2.7 MegaPic Pentax to video.

    I consider a boat camera throwaway and want to keep total cost of camera + stuff (batteries, memory, shipping,etc) to < 400$.

    Priorities are:

    * water and salt resistance
    * 1K X 1K video image quality
    * motion compensation
    * battery life

    Suggestions from the video crowd?

    I shoot most of my vids on a pocket Canon Elph IS
    200 bucks, NIB

    http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...ct_id=10996389

    Comes with 4GB Flash. 30 minutes of video. It's not widescreen. But at 640 x 480 at 30 fps is pretty damn good for a small package. Stick it in your pocket until you need it. And if you drop it in the H2O, your only out 200 clams. Still, don't drop it in the water. The video on it could be priceless.

    The Pentax Optio is nice and the Olympus STYLUS TOUGH are the way to go for boat cameras.

    I run the Olympus now myself. Up to 12mpix.

    In a REAL video camera your not gonna get waterproof and killer quality. There are a few small units out there like this Sanyo that do fit the bill though

    SHOCKPROOF (6.6ft.)
    Life can be tough, this camera is tougher. Rugged metal body and revolutionary shock-absorbing construction are designed to withstand a 6.6-foot drop, bump or other mishap.

    WATERPROOF (33ft.)
    A revolutionary system of waterproof seals and gaskets keeps water out so you can take pictures as deep as 33 feet underwater.

    FREEZEPROOF (14°F/-10°C)
    Boldly enter that winter wonderland without worrying about your camera. This camera is winterized to perform at below-freezing temperatures.

    CRUSHPROOF (220lbf.)
    With a rugged body and reinforced LCD, the STYLUS TOUGH-8000 withstands up to 220 pounds of pressure so your camera and images are protected.

    DUAL IMAGE STABILIZATION
    Forget about blurry shots with this 2-in-1 anti-blur solution. Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization compensates for camera shake to keep your shots steady while Digital Image Stabilization captures crisp, clear images in any situation.

    Sanyo Xacti makes a waterproof video camera up to 10'. Not sure about the other specs though.

    I'm looking at the Sanyo Xacti as the one and only option now.

    I have an old Optio ( 3.7 Mpics) which shoots 30 FPS 640 X 480 video.

    I want at least 1 X 1 video and a faster frame rate for the sights you see on water that deserve a bit more than a pocket cam.

    For under $400 I can't think of too many. I don't know what kind of video you are looking to produce. If you are trying to make videos for advertising or a website or just for personal viewing, that matters quite a bit. If you are looking to show it to a large audience like advertising on a website I would have to go with a HD hard-drive video camera. Get a mount for it and invest the money because you won't regret it. For personal use, skip the HD part but get a hard-drive camera. There are many out there. I have a JVC HD it holds 7.5 hours of video and I have bought 4 batteries at $80 a pop and I can record all day long. Like I said the camera reflects on the type of video you are using it for. If you have any questions send me a pm or what not. As far as water resistant I am not to familiar with many that have great quality video as well as being waterproof. When you are looking for a video camera make sure you read all the reviews on the camera website from people that have bought the camera. These reviews usually give you a good idea of the advantages and disadvantages. Good luck!!

    The goal is personal use. Stick it in a tower rod holder; point it back at the spread and forget about it till we're on; then pan by hand.

    The Sanyo looks like your best bet. It's 30FPS at 720P which I think will be enough. If you really want 60 frames then the next thing is a hard drive camera that supports 60FPS for quick uploads to PC but beyond that try to find one that has an optional diving housing available. You'll probably exceed that 400 Benjamins by a long shot though.
