A fishing vessel was abandoned off the coast of the Montauk on Tuesday after it began taking on water, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
A Coast Guard helicopter was in the process of hoisting the four crew members off the approximately 75-foot boat at about 5 p.m., according to John Olsen, a search and rescue director for the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound in New Haven, Connecticut.
The vessel, the Johanna Lenore, was believed to be out of Point Judith, Rhode Island. It began taking on water at about 2:30 p.m., while it was about 30 miles southeast of Montauk, Mr. Olsen said. The Coast Guard delivered pumps to the crew, but efforts to save the boat failed.
“It happens,” Mr. Olsen said. “If you can’t keep up with the water, you have to get off the ship.”
Mr. Olsen said it was not clear what caused the vessel to begin taking on water. He said seas were about 12 feet today, and the wind was blowing at 30 to 35 knots.

I just got squirted with ballyhoo poop
For the umpteenth time the Coasties saved some more serious bacon. Waytogo.
I surely wonder how many delivered but unretrieved pumps the USCG goes through annually on average?
