Pit Monkey First Class
Veatch Canyon Overnighter 8/16-8/17
Left Falmouth at 12 and started the troll at the top of veatches at 4:20... 30 minutes into the troll the long rigger ballyhoo pops and the mid rigger slugo bar gets slammed also. The ballyhoo unbuttoned but the sluggobar stays tight and 10 minutes later we have a 75 pound yellowfin on the deck!!!! so we circle back around and troll through the spot again and the sluggobar gets tight again and so does the green machine bar!!! 15 minutes later we have 2, 30 pound bigeyes on the deck..back up on the troll again we pass through the spot two more times without a hookup with nothing so we kept heading south.
Trolled down the middle of the canyon without anything more than one mahi... so we set up for the night towards the bottom of the canyon. 1 sword line 2 yellowfin lines went through 60 pounds of butterfish with nothing to show for it except 1 real big a$$ shark we couldnt identify before it bit us off.
Started the troll again at 5... trolled north with just one mahi for about 6 hours and we said screw it well just try to catch mahi. so we took in the 3 short squid bars, leaving the sluggobar and the green machine bar out. we set out the zukkers right before we came up to the first pot. as we go by the pot everyone is watching the zukkers but i am standing up on the gunnal watching the whole spread when i see a explosion on the green machine bar and line starts peeling out!!! i scream thats no mahi someone get on the rod and we need to get this gear in. The thing just keeps screaming and takes us half way down the dacron... we finally get the gear in and start gaining line on the damn thing.. we get up to the swivel and i wire it in and we gaff it and bring it on the deck!!! 85 pound yellow!!! Yeah. I rethink our whole spread and put all gream machine bars and daisy chains out with the two long ballyhoo.
We worked the area till around 1:20 with nothing, when the captain says lets go home.. we keep the boat running while i start pulling in the short daisy chain i see a swirl behind it!! so i through it in freespoll and thumb some to him and it starts screaming so it slam a little bit of drag to set the hook the scream im on and look up just to see the two green machine bars get slammed and say triple header!!!! so we pull thoughs fish on the deck they were 35 pound longfin.. Captain says well i guess we should stay a bit longer get nothing so we say lets pull them in..I get up the starboard gear while jackson gets in the port side he says all in and so do i then check one more time and say, dont go the long rigger is still out and i look at jackson and say i guess its not all in yet and we both laugh.. i take it down off the rigger and untangle it around the engines then start reeling up and half way in a fish takes it and i set the hook and fight it stand up another 35 pound longfin. The captain said lets go home, got home at 7 overall great trip and lots of fun!!!!!!

Crab mustard is good
Thanks for the report.
Watching the hits are worth the price of admission. 75 and 85lb yellows are good fish on standup.
It's funny how you can pull lures forever and then when you go to reel the spread in its, Fish on!!!!!!
That's why you have to adjust the spread and the speed all day long.
You can't go out there and pull the trailer and expect them to jump on.
We get one on and we're jigging the lures before we bring them in. These fish swim in schools, when you hook up the dumb one there are other idiots behind them and they follow the dumb one all the way to the boat.
Seen it many times.
Fun!!!!! Well that's the first time I saw that word used this season.
Thanks again for posting.
