URGENT MUST READ STELLWAGEN NO FISHING ZONE PROPOSAL

    Guys,

Very few commented on my post of moving the BB buoy but you better be involved with this one. Today at the Stellwagen Sanctuary Advisory Council Craig MacDonald pitched his proposal requesting 251 NM out of the 864 NM Sanctuary be restricted to some sort fo restrictions on fishing. There are charts and a 39 page document here so open and read. I challenge each and everyone of you to write the council, Kerry, Scott Brown, Congressman, Representatives, Governor, DMF, Secretary of Commerce and anyone else. We need to work with anyone commercial or recreational to stop this insane proposal during a time when Obama has a new job package on the street.

Remember if you see hook and line only it will be only a matter of time before NOAA (Sanctuary) wants to change it to NO FISHING. This is the biggest fisht in years for anyone who fishes Stellwagen and this will be presented to the NEFMC come November.

    Respectfully,

    Did you read the proposal?

First off (page 16), it's 89 sq. nm out of 641 sq. nm. closed to fishing.
Second, it might not be a bad thing to limit commercial fishing on the bank.
I also think that comment about "Remember if you see hook and line only it will
be only a matter of time before NOAA (Sanctuary) wants to change it to NO FISHING"
Is a chicken little response. Relax, the sky is not falling.

I'm in favor of the proposal.

Totally disagree with you, Cap. First off, letting them get a foothold on no fishing zones here on the east coast is the last thing we want to do. There are all kinds of groups dying to close off much bigger areas. Dave is not exaggerating when he says this will only be the beginning. Second, thats one hell of an important 89 square miles to allow no fishing in. Not sure why on earth anyone who fishes would support this. Do you even fish in the region? If so it blows my mind you would support this.

Way off base with these comments. Look at Cali and Florida. Once the foot is in the door the enviros will not stop. I would love a hook and line, (and harpoon) fishery but this is not what they want. They do not want fishing at ALL!!!

    To The Capt.

I just looked and you have a total of eight posts here and in your profile seven of them seem argumentive which gives me the impression that you are post here just to stir the pot.

I have a few questions and please answer them honestly.

Where do you fish out of and what species do you target

How often do you fish Stellwagen Bank each season and fish other days during the year

Do you or your spouse (if you have one) ever order fish and chips, haddock, scallops, lobster etc. These species are landed by commercial fisherman when you see them for sale. Much of this is caught on Stellwagen Bank and Tilles or shall I say in the Sanctuary.

Do you have a problem with commercial fisherman and charter fisherman who follow the laws and regulations put into place by the NEFMC? It appears to me you have an issue with commercial fisherman

Once they get their hands on this piece of bottom, they will change the areas to fit their agenda. This is what has happened at the other Sanctuaries in the country. Did you read the proposal and I don't mean thumb through it?

I would like to know what having a new research boat in 2006 built and the SVRX being in Norfolk, buying land down by the boathouse and doing renovations down at the boathouse have to do with closing these areas off. It has to do with "We need a bigger budget because we now have enforcement power and closed areas to enforce".

I am not sure how long you have been fishing, did you attend the meetings for Framework 45 and Amendment 13? Remember when the cod fish limits went to ten, size increased from 21" to 24", a year round robust charter fishery had five months of their season pulled out from under them. Do you remember the two additional weeks, April 1st - 15th taken away? How about the loss of quota in the tuna fishery? Do you remember the days at sea drastically reduced and boats being forced into catch shares and many having to sell their boats to survive. Maybe you do remember all of this and I do I was at many of those meetings and the one thing I just don't remember is getting back anything NOAA took away from us.

If you support this good for you we are all entitled to our opinion but I suggest you read up on the history of the SBNMS and the promises that were made with commercial and recreation fisherman supporting the creation for the purpose to prevent mining, building gambling platforms, drilling and offshore dumping. Had fisherman had a crystal ball they never would have supported the Sanctuary.

Please feel free to contact me anytime to discuss.

    Respectfully,

    Dave

Look, I fish a lot up and down the east coast, including Stellwagen. I’m in favor of
Shutting off blocks of water in areas that can be fished around.
I would never be in favor of blocking off an area which would require
A fisherman to travel 20-30 miles minimum to the fish. The 89 sq. nm.
They want to shut down can be easily fished around. Maybe I’m wrong but,
I believe there could be a benefit to the fish stocks by doing this.
As far as com. Fishing, I don’t think they should be aloud on Stellwagen
At all. At least not draggers and gill netters.
