AUGUST 26, 2010 Kingston, Massachusetts
I would like to thank my family, friends, and all the volunteers who helped to put tonight’s wonderful event together. We have food, music, refreshments, and a lot of great people here. You’ll probably see some old friends and make new ones as well.
No matter where you live in the world, or what you do in life, there is government. If there is a boss or manager where you work, that is a form of government. If you play a team sport, there is a form of government in that structure as well. Even family life and parenthood carries with it a form of government. Government isn’t bad – bad government is bad. Common sense government is necessary and good. I have seen government work. When I was a legislator, we cut taxes on unearned income in half. We built a rainy day fund for Massachusetts of over 3 billion dollars. We created jobs by offering tax incentives for biotech firms, and other industries that created an economic climate in Massachusetts where they could compete and propel the state’s economic expansion.
Yes, we have seen government work. Unfortunately, we seem to be living in a time where government isn’t working for or representing the people. It’s too big, too confident in telling us what we need to know and need to do. It’s too involved in private enterprise or other areas of our life that it knows little or nothing about.
I was speaking with a group of lobstermen recently. Like so many in the lobster and fishing industry, they are very concerned with government oversight and the regulations being imposed by our elected officials that threaten their livelihood. They shared with me stories of regulators coming aboard their boats with measuring gages to check on the size of the lobsters in their holds. A necessary aspect of the business, for sure, but some of these regulators were holding the gages upside down. We’re not talking a high tech piece of machinery here, folks. This is when government doesn’t work. The government doesn’t get extra points for creating a job if that job consists of hiring an incompetent regulator; especially one who has the power to negatively affect an entire industry.
And for all the concern we hear out of Washington about the lagging economy, they don’t seem to be doing much to turn things around. The term “job creation” has become an oxymoron. Even worse, they’re making it more difficult to maintain the jobs we already have. If you’re a small business owner – or you work for one – you know what I’m talking about. The government demands you provide over priced health insurance. They want complete access to your company census, payroll records, and bank accounts. They want oversight and transparency. Actually, I stand corrected – they want transparency and oversight for you and for me, but apparently not for themselves or the financial institutions on Wall Street that we bailed out.
We – you and I – the taxpayers, have seen hundreds of billions of dollars of taxpayer funds spent in the form of direct loans given to bailout reckless Wall Street companies and banks because our elected officials told us that their failure would hurt our economy. But the good news is mortgage rates are now at an all time low! Great deal for us, right? Probably a good time to refi, right? Apparently not. Most people I know don’t qualify for these exceptional rates because the very institutions we kept afloat have refused to modify their lending standards. Nice quid pro quo. Here’s my message to Wall Street and the banks: next time your poor decisions render you bankrupt-- lose our number.
While floating these billion dollar bailout loans to Wall Street and the Auto industry, our elected officials have found creative ways to generate new revenues by nickel and diming us with taxes and fees. Our home values are dropping, yet our property taxes continue to rise. Fees to tax payer supported public parks and facilities are high and seem to rise almost daily, meaning that we are paying again to walk on land that we already own.
This country is in an economic quagmire caused by the Catch-22 policies and hypocritical actions of our elected officials. You and I know we can’t balance our check book with continued spending. Yet current government policy consists of paying off debt by creating more debt. This is bad government. Creating a TRILLION dollar deficit without a mandated constructive repayment plan is unsustainable and will ultimately leave our children and their grandchildren with the burden of trying to repay our fiscal irresponsibility. This is bad leadership.
What can you the voters of the 10th district do? You can elect a person free of party affiliations who will represent what you want from Washington -- intelligent policies and laws that will create jobs, control spending, protect the environment and coastal areas, and end these wars.
I believe common sense dictates that:
We need to set a goal to become energy independent and have the determination to develop the technologies that will make our dependence on foreign oil a thing of the past.
We need to create legislation that will embrace and partner with private enterprise, the very people and industries who understand job creation and economic expansion.
We need to support our troops at every level when we commit to a military campaign–and that support starts with making sure that these men and women are risking their lives for the right reasons. Responding to attacks and hunting down our enemies are the right reasons. Nation building and acting as the world’s policeman are not.
We need to stop spending billions of dollars in other countries rebuilding their schools, their hospitals and their roads when so much of our own infrastructure is in desperate need of repair. This work is necessary and can and should be done by and for American citizens.
We need to protect our precious coastline while also developing its economic potential for maritime, environmental and renewable “green” energy job opportunities.
I thought it fitting tonight to have my two sons introduce me. It’s because of them I almost decided not to run. Having served in office before, I know that a campaign is a very time consuming, expensive, and trying affair. But I am a mother, a homeowner, a businesswoman and a very concerned citizen. I am uneasy for the future of our country and worried for the future of my children. After much deliberation, it is because of them that I am running for Congress.
We all have family members, friends, and neighbors who are out of work or are in fear of losing their jobs. Some of us here tonight have lost our homes or are facing that very real possibility. There is good reason for the concern, the anger and the fear that is prevalent in America now. Our current political landscape has become ineffective, self-serving, and wracked with gridlock.
Yes, I am concerned. But I am also optimistic. I am optimistic because the American people are tough, resilient, innovative, and hard working. We’ve all heard the gibberish about unemployed people who actually enjoy not working. I don’t believe that. I believe that by nature, Americans are hard workers. I believe that if something is broken, we fix it. I believe if something is wrong, we do whatever is necessary to make it right. I believe something is wrong in Washington.
And now, we the people of the 10th District have a chance in this election to start fixing the gridlock caused by partisan party politics. As an Independent candidate, with strong private and public sector experience, I have the knowledge, the understanding, and the common sense to help turn things around. My record speaks for itself. When I held public office – and worked for you – we created jobs, we cut taxes, and we made government do what it it’s supposed to do – benefit the people.
When I’m elected to Congress, I promise to work hard for you to make the right decisions again and make the kinds of decisions that will benefit this district, this state, this country, and most importantly, the future of our children. This November, vote wisely, vote independently, vote for the common sense that Washington needs right now. Vote for me, Maryanne Lewis. And when I get to Washington, I will vote for you. Thank you.
