This is the second time in only a few weeks ... I guess high-grading is legal in NC, never mind a trawl fishery for prespawn fish ... plus the multiple bandit sunken gillnets getting busted at the mouth of the Chesapeake with THOUSANDS of breeders ... this all makes me sick to my stomach, and the fact that our tightly regulated hook-and-line commercial fishery gets criticized when the fish get raped on that part of their migration makes me MAD!!! These are the SAME FISH that are disappearing from NE waters.
So, anybody gonna do anything about it, or are we just gonna grumble about fewer stripers ... I'll be at Mass Bass at the MV Derby booth if anybody wants to come by and talk about this, and figure out a way to end this wasteful idiocy ... Standing By

I just read somewhere they completely shut down the fishery due to the ramped poaching, high grading, etc. It pisses me of to no end as well. I am a supporter of both recreational and commercial fishing, however, who ever is responsible for this makes my blood boil as well. We spend so much time and effort fighting the environmental groups that want to take it all away from us, this does nothing but give them fuel for the fire!!! Greed and stupidity is a dangerous thing. I hope they shut down this commercial fishery for years otherwise none of these guys will ever get the message. We are going to hear, but it was only a few bad apples, bla bla bla bla, I'm sorry but I have zero sympathy for these guys, they did it to themselves! Talk about biting the hand that feeds you!

I brought this up in another forum, why is there no rod/reel commercial fishery for these bass down there??? We have a successful rod/reel here in MA, it allows for no by-catch, minimal mortality, effective quota system, and puts lots of people to work???

I have had it with this sh*t. nmfs sucks, trawlers suck, DNR sucks nobody can make a good decision. Whats at fault here is the human mind, these trawler guys obviously don't care about the future of their fishery or anyone who depends on stripers for their livelihood which after this mess is probably already over. I hope those NC guys grow some balls and step up. The fishing industry needs a revolution, massive, sweeping changes. I support commercial fishing but this is just pure greed, and I don't see how it can be stopped when it appears that its just human nature to abuse the natural world.

Are there any individuals on this forum who have experience with striped bass reform? In particular, experience with bringing the bass population back from the brink during the 1980's?

Id like to do something to help prevent future incidents like this, however I'm unsure of the most effective avenue for my efforts.

    Thanks!

    one fish 36

go back to one fish 36". cut the comm quota to 750. Im all for a little cut back if it will help the fishery. I just dont want to see it get to the point where they have to cut it off. then everyone is totally screwed!

They closed the trawlers down, and are having a meeting to address the high grading or whatever caused that mess.

They opened it back up again as of now.
    http://www.tidalfish.com/forums/show...-done-it-again!!!

There was another huge trawler kill two weeks after the first one too. The hearsay on the southern boards (tidalfish among others) was that the com trawlers were taunting the recs on the radio as the dumped their nets on purpose around Oregon Inlet to teach the recs a lesson. It is beyond pathetic. I have been boarded and searched off New Jersey in my center console and basically given a colonoscopy at sea (which I of course passed without problems), and the southern comms just piss all over us. It is ridiculous.
