Tuna vs Sharking in CCB and waters east

    Hey guys –
I’m heading out Saturday from the canal to fish CCB and waters east of the bank. Buddy (who doesn’t fish that much) wants to take his boat and go shark fishing. I’m trying to tell him we’re better off tuna fishing. Is it even worth trying to go sharking in these waters? The latest temp chart I saw the water was too cold for sharks in “close”, so we’d have to travel much further east (not a problem) to find the temp break. Of course, I’ll revisit on Friday once these clouds clear. I have all the gear and rigs I need to target both, so there’s no issues there – the only thing we’re missing is bait/chum at this point. Just figured I’d ask you guys that have been fishing CCB a lot harder than I have this year what you guys think? Any insight and suggestions/thoughts would be much appreciated.

    Thanks
    DJ

East to Wildcat has been very reliable for blue sharks for each of the three times for us this year. One Porbeagle each of two times also. No love at all with Tuna yet. Maybe you target shark and find a school or more of tuna on the way. That's what I'd hope for unless you have live bait - then go for the tuna at SWC or Peaked Hill. If he doesn't fish much sharking can be a bit dangerous for a novice - even for someone who does it a lot

    The Bank

Still a TON of blue dogs on the Bank. All over really; SWC, NWC, Middle Bank...

A few guys have caught makos in these areas too. 3 have been brought into Scituate in the past week or so.

cool - thanks guys for the input. just got off the phone with saturday's crew. "Why do we need fresh bait? I have some stuff in the freezer. I don't want to spend time trying to catch bluefish." Oh boyeee.....

yeah like previously stated, the bank itself has been loaded w blue sharks as of late, live bait on the sw corner either in the deep stuff or the shallows has been almost automatic for sharks

I saw two makos west of the SW corner a week ago on my way in, would be awesome to fight one of them. good luck sat i might be doing the same.

Are the guys catching sharks on rigs meant for tuna or targeting sharks up on the bank?
Is it worth targeting sharks (drifting baits with wire) without chum(because of dogfish) on the SW/NW corner or does it make more sense to head east and set up a slick?

i have been fishing live bait (mackerel) for tuna and have completely abandoned my usual spots on the southern parts of the bank because the sharks have been so thick, i mean even on the ride back to scituate from the backside last week I had to swerve out of the way of a blue dog in the high fliers that was just under the surface,

I think it is time someone opened a market for the blue dogs. Blue dog chowder? Blues and chips....Blue head soup...got the picture?

Gross amount of big blue dogs from the fingers/parking lot off Barnstable to the fishing ledge. 5 live bluefish guarantees you 5 giant blue dogs - quickly too! As others have stated, tuna fishing has been tough with all the blue dogs and Makos on the bank. I can tell you firsthand that some of the makos are 500lbs and up. DO" NOT chum.
