Can any one explain the pros and cons of the rec permit and or the gen cat permit. What is the difference.
Can any one explain the pros and cons of the rec permit and or the gen cat permit. What is the difference.
comm you can catch and sell but you cant keep anything below 73"
Rec you can catch and keep one under 59" but you have to release everthing over
Rec as of right now you can keep 1 fish from 27" to under 59". No special gear, just go out and fish. Gen cat you need safety gear: life raft, gumby suits, epirb, etc etc. All that stuff will run you several grand. You can kill tuna over 73" in gen cat and I believe (aka I'm not sure) you don't have to sell them.
In other words...if you're fun fishing, get the rec permit. If you're trying to make money, get the general cat permit. Just know you'll need to invest loads of money in safety gear before you can even put a line in the water with the gen cat permit.
I like the option of selling a fish if i want to and i enjoy fishing for the larger fish.As of now i have epirb and life raft would anybody know where i can get a detailed list of mandatory equipment to fish the gen cat.Can you also sell the yellowe fin in the gen cat?
The gear depends on:
1) your boat (size, documented/undoc, etc)
2) where you fish (12-20 mi, 20-50 mi, 50+)
3) and when
Cold water requires extra stuff such as immer suits, additional raft reqs (eg. Solas A/B)
To be honest, I haven't quite figured it out.
Even if you already have a raft, it may be inadequate to meet the comm reqs. You could check with the coasties. I'll see if I can find the regs. It's quite lengthy and clear as mud.
How about the Charter category. From what i understand you can take one from 27 to 59 and one from 59 to 72. Is there any restrictions or requirement.
who wants to be a millionaire?
Oh! I do! It's pretty easy right? I can go out to the bank on the calm days in my bass boat and use my 114s. That should do it right? I should be rich by November
After you think you have all your stuff together, the Coast Guard will come inspect your boat to let you know what you need to be legal.
Charter/headboats have to declare either rec or comm at the beginning of the day. Then they have to adhere to either the rec regulations or commercial regulations for that day. If they kill, say, a 50" fish then they're done for the day. If they kill an 80" fish they can take 2 more over 73"
