    Tuna Meltdown 5/3/08

Well we left the dock at 6:30 am and topped off the tank over at Mystic marine fuel. We headed out passed Deer Island and was greated by a stiff 10 to 15 knot east wind that was stacking 3 to 4 footers at the entrance to the harbor. At this point I really got to appreciate having a larger boat than the old 20 footer. In the old boat I would be calling it a day and heading back to the dock. We made between 18 and 22 knots to the north west corner of Stellwagon. Upon arival I saw a small fleet of recreational boats and a couple head boats and figured I was in the right area.
It was slow pickins all day. You had to fight through about 10 shorts before you got rewarded with a keeper cod or haddock. Had a some help from Charlie Wade who was aboard an awsome looking 35' Henriques ( I forgot the boat name). But they put us on some larger fish towards the end of the day.
Total tally for the day was 5 nice cod and 3 haddock. Fish were all taken on 10 and 12 ounce butterfly jigs. Colors were glow, yellow, and pink. Depths were around 120 feet right on the edge of the bank. All fish were stuffed with BIG 6"+ sandeels.

Nice report, hopefully the cod will still be around when the boat is splashed in the next week or two. Glad to hear about the sandeels being everywhere, I hope the cod leave some for the charlies once they show up later on. Go fry up a nice cod fillet, almost nothing beats a fresh piece of cod.

Just did fry up a couple fillets with my dad. Always tastes better when you catch it yourself.

Nice work Danny! Glad to hear that the new Meltdown is up and hammering. I hope those sand eels stick around for our other finned friends.
