Maybe for small tuna under 50lb. and even then its not the best choice of reels for any size tuna. That reel was not designed for the presure and line burning runs you will get with tuna..

Good striper reel. But it wont last long being used for tuna.

    Here we go again.

Peter f, if you haven't yet experienced these fish on the end of any line then I really suggest that you book a trip with one of the professionals we have here on this board. Like it was stated in your other thread, the lessons learned with just one trip will be invaluable.

As far as the spin outfit, I suggest you wait years before you attempt that, even the guys that strictly hunt these fish with spinning gear don't have very good track records and the thought of you hooking ten fish this year and losing everyone of them is a little upsetting. If you are just downright set on landing one with spin gear, please book a trip with one of the charter outfits that strictly hunt these fish in that manner. You'll understand after you've hooked your first!

I do not recommend targeting these fish with anything other than top notch spinning gear

I would have to agree with Sushi42 on his whole post except the landing percentage. I would also recommend chartering an guide to get your cherry busted. I promise you with the wrong gear its NOT fun but the fish also pay the price.

I am one of those people Sushi refers to, I chase tuna them on spinning gear off NC, off NJ then Off Cape Cod. Last season I went 15 for 18 on 66-69" fish, not one of my fish swam away with a lot of gear other than a lure. This season on two trips off North Carolina I have landed 7 of 11 on 69/70" fish so far. The difference is the fight times are sub 20 minute range with great gear and technique you can land them quick.

Im using Shimano Stella 18000 for casting and 20000 for jigging on rods built specifically for the task, 100 pound mainline and 130 leaders. This ensures the fight wont be prolonged. There are a lot of great guides up in that area that will get you acclimated into the fishery

Anything under a saragosa will not suffice and even those get burnt up like a cigar on a decent fish

GMAN, I try not to ruffle too many feathers on here but sometimes I inadvertantly do just that. That being said, I know there are a few of you bad asses that have an excellent track record. Yup, that means you sir GMAN , however, there are also many out there doing this that I believe just don't have the amount of experience needed or the proper quality gear that is needed to be victorious in a true battle to the death. Jump on you tube and watch some of the videos on there from some of the so called "pros" and see how many they bust off with spin gear! Pisses me right off! Again Peter, just listen to these guys on here, they won't steer you wrong. This is a world class fishery and you need to learn from top notch guys the rights and wrongs to catching these Gods Of All Fishes. Good luck.

You didn't ruffle my feathers one bit? I was actually agreeing with you in my post!! Thats why i said "I agree with Sushi42 on everything except the landing percentage"

I wasn't saying I was a bad ass at all far from it I've busted fish off. I was trying to get my point across that you should only use top gear when chasing these fish because if you don't you will hurt yourself and the fish. I think I said that?! I also think I said charter with a pro first so you understand what your dealing with. Im not beefing with you or anyone I was merely trying to add value to your response

Take it easy bro, your completely off on this one
