NEW BEDFORD — An 80-foot fishing trawler ran aground on the New Bedford side of Sconticut Neck before dawn Wednesday, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
None of the five crew members on board was injured, said Petty Officer James Rhodes. The Coast Guard were notified of that the vessel was taking on water near “Black Rock,” at about 5:45 a.m., said Rhodes. Rhodes identified the vessel as “Megan Marie.”
The U.S. Coast Guard, New Bedford Police and Massachusetts Environmental Police arrived on the scene and took three of the crewmen to safety, said Rhodes.
Coast Guard dispatched from Woods Hole arrived on scene with a dewatering pump, and assisted the two who stayed aboard.
Ultimately, the ship was freed and headed into New Bedford Harbor, said Rhodes.
“There was a tug on scene but they had propulsion and steering so I'm assuming they drove it back,” said Rhodes.
Rhodes said he did not know what led the vessel to run aground
