I heard the mayday from the boat and the pon pon from the coast guard..stayed close to home due to the small craft advisory..wish I made the run to the bank..
I was there it SUCKED. 8-10s in the morning. If I had listened to the advice of a charter captain coming home at 8am, I would've saved ourselves a beating to the golf balls.
Today coming home was even worse. Tried once at noon and had to turn around. 4pm it was 6-8+ the WHOLE way back to Green Harbor. Literally laid down 100 yards off the jetties.
edit: Just talking about this at the dinner table. Why doesn't the coast guard broadcast these mayday calls across all channels? We had 69 on all day, we don't scan 16. We were in the vicinity, didn't know there was mayday call until we read the boston.com article. There was at most 6 boats there.

always have 16 on scan, why not?
may enable you to help someone, sometimes you have to listen to some nonsense but worth it in my opinion.
I read this in the CC Times Saturday and felt awful for his family, it'd be tough to be the Captain or owner of that boat and have to live with what happened.
I have a 20 foot center console and the thought of 8-10 foot waves is terrifying. It's important to remember how vulnerable we are out there particularly in smaller boats, it doesn't take much and just because land is in sight doesn't mean its within reach.

Just thinking about the CG relaying a message over all frequencies. I bet something similar to the DSC feature on many newer VHF sets could accomplish that result. I haven't really read up on the DSC technology, but I've heard it used once and it really gets your attention.
