"Tammy Rose" Tuna report

This past week has been very good for tuna fishing out east with lots of action and lots of catching, which has been nice for a change. Tuesday we started down to the south and had lots of whales and bait upon our arrival. We set the spread out and had a fish up and on the pink long left rigger but he missed it. Very quickly we had another fish up and on the long left rainbow bar and this fish was hooked. The seas were a bit up and down so we had to fight the fish and after 17 mins we had him boat side only to pull the hook. The next fish hit the short corner rainbow rig and smoked it only to break off due to a bluefish nick in the line that we didn’t see. Next we had the black rig go off and we got a gaff into that fish. We had a couple more bites and never landed another fish. After 2 hours of nothing the rainbow rig went off again and we landed, and tagged and released that fish. The totals for the day were 8 bites, 6 solid hook ups, 2 fish to the boat, 2 fish broken off, and 2 pulled hooks. Not the best average but still great action. After last week it felt good to be on the board. Wednesday we had a family onboard and they wanted to catch one tuna for dinner and see whales, and they wanted to leave at 6 am. So off the dock at a leisurely 6am and out east we head. I hear some chatter from some boats and see a fleet but I really wanted to find some fish on my own to work. I got the glasses out and found some whales. As I was steaming over towards them the whole world erupted with tuna all over the surface with birds diving on them. We set out and got on them and almost doubled up. The right side, with black and pink rigs, got hit with the black rig coming tight. We pulled the hook on this fish and had to set back out. 5 mins. later we had the short left green rig pop, and we soon had this fish on the tail rope. We got another bite only to loose that fish. We then trolled out to the whales and they performed all the tricks. Mission accomplished. I began to troll back to the west when out of no where the center rigger, with the mini titanium rainbow bird bar, got crushed. The young boy grabbed the harness and we soon had a nice tag and release on this fish. We headed back to Stage Harbor at 11:15am. Not bad. 2 for 4. Today was the best by far. We got to the boat just has the squall lines were blowing through. The wind farm was showing 30 knots at 3 am and I was not too keen on today’s forcast. I had my annual Osterville Anglers Club trip with some of my fellow OAC members onboard. We watched as the stars came out and the wind died down and the fog began to move in. I fired up the Raymarine radar and saw that the front had moved out to the east so we headed out of Stage. We got beat up a little through Pollack Rip but the “Tammy Rose” was eating it up pretty good. The fog was thick and it lifted for 15 mins. which was long enough for me to find the birds and the fish. We got the spread out and got bit right away. We missed it but the long left pink rig exploded and we had a nice fat fish on the line. We missed him at the boat with the gaff and pulled the hook. Not the way I wanted to start our day. We got the spread back out and got another bite quickly and this time we got the gaff into him. We then had a ball with lots of bites and several more fish to the boat. Black, pink and rainbow again have been hot with the shotgun rainbow mini titanium bird bar doing a fair amount of catching. The totals for today were 4 fish and 8 bites. The Hoo’s have stayed in the cooler for now, but we will see. Back out there in the morning so we will see if this is going to continue. We have had lots of calls to the shop this week looking for tuna info. With the high costs of fuel everyone wants to go when the “Bite” is on. Trust me guys, if you wait and “chase” the “Bite” your going to miss it. It’s August and it’s time to go fishing. When the weather is there just go. The bite is up and down. Good luck. Went 4 for 5 today and two were at the 60 inch mark. All four were released with sat tags, had a charter that paid for the UNH tagging team to do their thing. Thanks guys. Marked a ton of bait and had the fish under the boat many times. Marked one bunch up high and was tight on the short corner rig before I could tell the crew we marked 'em. Things are looking up. It was a great day out there today. How do you have time to catch fish with everyone hailing you??? Anyway we were fishing outside the fleet and went 4 for 4. Doubled up at the morning slack and then got 2 later. Fish were between 56"-60"
