"Tammy Rose"- The Hook-Up! Tuna report

I have been tuna fishing all week out east of Chatham. We have had fish everyday and the bite has been up and down and all around. I am on day number 4 of 5 and feeling a little bit tired from getting up at 3am. We have already landed 23 tuna for this season and the bite has just begun. The last two days we have been out tuna tagging with the UNH group. Yesterday we landed 5 tuna and released three with SAT tags. The fish were mixed in with the bass and blues and it was a crazy bite. One second you have bass and blues up on one rig and then you have a tuna up on another and then more blues and wham… tuna fish on!! It’s crazy. We have gone through more gear in two days then we have all year. Shear pandemonium. Typical June fishing forsure. We even had bass out over 500 feet deep. That sucks!! They need to move in-shore. The squid rigs are really working well. A buddy of mine landed a 78 incher on a squid bar today out east so the big ones are around. Another one of my friends released a 68-70 inch fish at the boat two days ago. You have to check your rigs for chaff and bites from all the bass and bluefish out there. Lots of repairs this week so stay on top of it and make sure you bring spare hook baits and spare rigs. It’s going to be interesting with all the bass and blues around. You just have to fish through the bass and blues. The tuna are with them!!!!
Today was just a stellar day out east. Awesome sunrise and fish biting on a morning slack, life is good. We went lines in and got bites right away and it wasn’t long before we had another 55 incher swimming with some new hardware from the UNH tagging team. My crew had to work hard all day to keep the baits in the water with all of the critters biting. My new crew is young and learning and we have really grown as a team in the last week. Tim was letting out the short left rigger when a nice fish exploded on it and missed. He worked a little “Tammy Rose” mojo and was able to get him back and this time the whole boat watched as he cannon balled out of the water and ate the hook bait. FISH ON!! He made a great run and we got him stopped. All of a sudden my reel decided to not work anymore, the oldest reel on the boat, and we were in a “situation”. I had one of the boys go down below and grab my 80stw and I quickly stripped off some line and crimped on a small Spro wind on swivel. I had the boys grab the mainline and we quickly cut the line and I crimped it onto the 80stw. We got the fish tight and the angler on the new rod and we brought the fish to the boat for another SAT tag and release. Just some good luck because that could have gone very badly. The score for today was 4 fish released. Two with pop-up SAT tags and two with implant archival tags. Not bad for June fishing. I will be back at in the morning and then off for two days and then I will be fishing Tuesday through Sat. If you would like to go tuna fishing please call soon. The summer is almost booked up and we will sell out. If you want to go tuna fishing with the crew of the “Tammy Rose” in Sept. you better call soon. Thanks Capt. Eric
