Tammy Rose East of Chatham report

The bite is still good out east. Today we had the UNH tagging team onboard and we were attempting to place x-tags, mini pop-up satellite tags, into juvenile bluefin tuna. This is an ongoing project with the “Tammy Rose” and the UNH Large Pelagics Research Center. I did not have my crew with me today so Capt. Rich, my online store manager, jumped onboard to give us a hand today. We went 3 for about 12 bites and had a lot of missed fish, but we had lots of bites and lots of action. We got two fish tagged in the morning that ran around 57 inches each. The bite was a little slow but we moved to the north and found some life and had three more bites including a big bite on the big black bar. The fish made a blistering run but we broke it off on the main line. I think the fish got his tail up into the 80lb mono and he busted the line. Later on I was in the cockpit cleaning lines when we raised a fish on the long left and nobody else saw the bite. I was screaming at everyone to watch the lines and just when I said that the right long pink squid bar exploded and started to dump the Penn 70vs. Big run usually equals big fish and we were watching a big three hundred yard run. Ben from the UNH team was fighting the fish and this fish was big. Much bigger than we had been catching. We cleared the lines and settled into the fight. This fish was doing the whole game, big circles, fighting up high then running deep. After 20 mins. we finally got a look at the fish and he looked big. We got him up and I pushed the drag to full and we got the leader. We pulled him up on the deck and he taped out at 70 inches. Big and fat, I would put him at 210-220lbs easy. We got the sat tag in him and back out the door in the water quickly. We swam him and he was kicking and going the whole time. We released him and he swam away looking great! Just an awesome fish and an awesome tag and release. Now Mr. Fishy tell us about your world. Hopefully we will see his movements for the next 11 months. We got another couple of bites but no more hook-ups. I will be in the Bay in the morning soaking bluefish and flying kites for giants. It’s August so I have to get this out of my system. The full moon is coming this weekend so be ready for some slow down on this awesome bite that we have had for the last 12 days. I will be out east Fri-Sun. Good luck Capt. Eric

Be sure to post up the info down the road when you get this data back, it will definetly be interesting to learn more about these fish.

Good luck with the giants, have they been in the bay as of late?

Another great report. Congrats on the big one. I see another TV segment coming. Any snapper blues around?

BTW, I met your brother over at RCBY. Nice guy. You could pass for twins. My boat is headed to his shop tomorrow, hopefully for the first and last time.
