Too much gap = more bend and play in your shaft under load and that leads to really bad things over time.

Second, if a line binds in the cutter and is not cut - your now dealing with a line, cutters, a knife and no room to cut out a wrapped line without cutting yourself.

Third (I lied) if in fact spurs or cutters cost 5% fuel economy - nope - next boat gets a pony tank locker.
Thanks for the explanation. I figured there was a reason or you'd have them...

I run a 26 footer with o/b's and have been thinking about moving up but this stuff freaks me out. I have no desire to jump in 90 miles out.

Does your boat have prop pockets? Does that help?

    Larry,

Sorry to hear that you ate that tag line, but luckily, you handled it before things got too ugly out there. I'm curious as to why the powers to be of this website decide what threads they are going to keep for marketing purposes and which ones they are going to toss? The original post was to give a heads up to those of us in exactly the situation that Larry ended up in. Unfortunatly, it didn't help Larry. I would like to know why that thread deserved to be deleted.........

That's a great response. I should know better now that one should never:

    1) Trust another buddies post as being always true
    2) Do one's own homework before posting stupid comments
    3) Never, never post anything after more than 2 cocktails
    4) Never post anything when you've come back from the edge, cocktail in hand, and working on 2 hours of sleep after 36 hours of being on or near the water.

For the good news now, I think the noreaster is done and we can see what's up with fishing!

The point here is I have encountered 100 yards of line up wind of a ball. The line was dark nylon exterior with an orange poly center and was floating perhaps 2' down under the water ballooned out in the current. On a grey day or low light conditions you would never see it.
My understanding is that the the flag of a high flyer always floats down current from the ball and down current is where the real threat of a trailing / trap line is, are you saying that's not always the case?

I was asleep on the approach but the guy driving at the time is as experienced as I am. He said he made a pass upcurrent on the ballside and the line was up current of the ball. I do not doubt what he said; he knows the drill as well as I do.

I have seen this twice before, do not understand how it happens, whether its simply current against wind or something more nefarious but it happens.

Thanks, if I wrapped us up in one of those lines while I was on the wheel I'd never live it down and I'd surely be the one going for the swim....

    Worth thinking about

We spotted a tag line up in the Star in a field of flyers.

A pair was running N/S and w. a northerly breeze the flyers on the field were all S of the balls.

The tag line was a 100' of yellow Poly easily visible in the clear and settling positions. It was coming north of the southern pot and was *upwind* of the ball. It started about 100' north and upwind of the ball and stopped just above the southern ball. It was directly on the line of the trawl.

I was driving and wasn't getting real close but it seemed connected to the pair of pots.

Can you tie a piece of Poly into a trawl of pots between two ball/flyers such that it floats upwards from the middle of the trawl?
