Italy and the video isn't that old found an article written about it in Italian on it from Nov 16th 2011

La strage degli spadini roughly translates to the Slaughter of the swords

Italian boat, I think, but it doesn't really matter ... spineless and senseless EU regulations and nonexistent enforcement.
We're on the brink of real swordfish recovery and a slow return to their traditional summer grounds (a bunch were behind Nantucket this summer) - I saw stacks of juveniles 10-20lbs at various Italian fish markets last year, and it made me sick knowing the potential size of those fish ... seeing pups barely a few weeks old tossed on deck for pennies boils my blood ...
Alex- couple good things. First, ICCAT agreed to its first major plan for Med swords last month, maybe in part to videos like this one. Second, pretty sure it is a seperate stock from ours. Not that it makes this video any easier to accept, but still better than it could be! I think you will start to see changes in this fishery like we have been seeing in bluefin now for a couple years. Or at least I hope so!

That was a drag. The whole "If I don't keep it someone else will" attitude makes me want to puke.

Not for nothing, but it's only about to get worse. With all the monetary problems in the EU, do you honestly think they care about this miscarriage of justice? Hell, they aint got the money to enforce it anyway. The US should back out of ICCAT and tell them all to piss up a rope!

Whats the difference between this and all the macho men that post pictures on the internet of a 40" bluefin? Just because a fish can fight for a half hour on a spinning rod doesn't make it anymore right

Tuna 3, I would hope the difference is that being sportsmen, which most of are, that we would have the conscience to release it after a good fight to live another day. I would be embarrased to be any part of a cockpit filled with babies. Those that do just don't get that they're part of the problem.

I doubt it. I can't recall ever seeing one before. I thought they eat jellyfish, Salps, and other tunicates.

They catch some strange things in the Mediterranean Sea. I do remember seeeing a truck load of Opah years ago in Sardinia...
