Sunday, Stellwagen, 58" Tuna that should of got away

Hit the bank this sunday and ran around in the parking lot. Got some casts to some busting fish east of the bank with nothing to show. Swung back to the bank, just north of south east corner, trolled through massive amounts of sand eels and kept swinging back through them with only two rods out because it was me and my girlfriend. Rigger clip releases and a 20 minute fight. I had a 20 foot 80lb flourcarbon leader so had to leader the fish up to the side of the boat. Took a throw with the harpoon, which is custom made by me with some ducktape and half a twelve foot surfcaster rod. 58" fish on the deck. Xrap hooked in the side of the fish with the center treble hook all bent up we thought we snagged it. Little investigation showed the fish was hooked in the left side of its mouth till the hook bent and the lure slid down its side of the body until all trebles grabbed hold. I couldn't believe we actually landed this. (btw I have all my hooks upgraded to Owner St66 except the one this fish hit)

Good job on the fish. I'm impressed you could tell the fish was 58" and not 59.5" before you stuck it. Good call.

I have it marked on the side of my boat at 59inch at that rod holder near the water line (prior planning thankfully). Fish fit perfect into the slot, I actually thought it was alot smaller, you can see me check it and pause before I asked for the harpoon . I highly suggest doing this to make things easier. (I had my hands filled with the leader so after I checked it decided to seal the deal with the harpoon rather than have my girl gaff it)

I hear you but you might want to lower that mark on the side of your boat to 56". A fat straight measured 56" fish will turn it in to a 59" fish curved fork length.
