    sunday east of chatham

First trip of the year started day waking up an hour late didn't get to ramp till 6am, ran east of monomoy,a lot of birds about 3 miles out but none working the water nothing on ff, pushed east to shipping lanes, no life, went north to BC no life, headed west to bass fish but got nothing but dogs. About to call it a day but decided to run to crab ledge see what's there. and about 2 miles or so off chatham in 50-55 feet, birds working in 2 spots about 100 yards apart. couple marks on ff. 11:30 3 bars in 5 minutes later, at 11:30 bang fish on. Fish almost spools my senator 115 with 80lb mono. Hour and a half later boatside. This fish was stubborn and would not give. Measured fish and boated. 59 on the money. Also seen fish breaking during the tug o war match. Never saw a single whale all day. Radio chatter sounded like a few others landed fish but don't know where. Little amazed these fish are in 50 feet of water, (is this common?). Anyway great day and can't wait to git r done again when the funds allow.

Oh yeah almost forgot. Fish enhaled widow maker bar from the hookup.

    Hey Ryan,

Those tuna are north of the Chatham cut every year in that shallow water when the bait is thick like it has been for the past few weeks. They usually range 50" to 70" and are fun to catch on light tackle. On Sunday they were busting everywhere in there. You have to put in the time because they dont stay in there for long periods. I have found that trolling east from there out ot 180 ' of water and back to the west works best.

As far as the bass go, there are a ton of dog fish on the bottom. The bass are right on top of them and the only way to get to them is casting a 4 oz. diamond jig, if you can find any left. Cast as far as you can and wait until it hits the bottom. When it does, crank fast about 12 times and you will hook into the bass. If you dont hook when you first start reeling, retrieve the lure and start over. The bass are thick and this method is about the only thing that works. Dont ask me why they wont hit a bucktail but they only seem to respond to those 4 oz diamond jigs the tackle stores cant seem to keep in stock. its a #47. Once you get it down you wont get any more dogs.

The more north you head from chatham the better the fishing seems to be for the bass. Seems like the bait is thicker up near nauset where last week it was north of the chatham cut seemed thicker. Just look for the fleet.

Saturday we did the entire length of Crab Ledge to the BC and zero life.

Go to an old spot south of crab ledge. Slack water we're out in no man's land by ourselves with bluefish on kites. Slob goes airborne and smashes our kite bait. At the same time a clam dragger on autopilot closes the gab to 200 yards. There's an entire ocean and two boats for miles.

We literally had to start the boat and gun the engines with baits still in the water.

    So much for our hookup.

FWIW: I was out there Saturday as well. Two whales all day. No birds. Tuna were jumping until 7am in about 100' of water, then vanished for the day. Tough tough day of trolling. Radio chatter was depressing with only one or two confirmed boatings.

Were you on the Knot boat? What was the name of the dragger/scalloper? PM it!
