Our trip started out of Mattapoisett @5:30 AM. We came up behind Our Island as we were leaving the canal, but were unable to raise them on the radio; later we heard several others try to raise them as well. A couple of miles out of the canal we noticed a bunch of birds circiling, so we went over to explore. Right under them was a pretty good size Mako swimming along; nothing else. We came right up on it, it settled a little, then back on top. Sharking's not our thing, so we headed back on our course towards the race. I know the crew on Our Island like their sharks, so it's to bad we didn't reach each other. A few miles before Fish Bank we come upon birds again; lots of birds this time. Then we start seeing busting fish, slot limit size fish. Bait showers here and there with Tuna chasing. Small bait, not sure what it was. We got a number of pretty good shots at them with the spinning gear, but not even a sniff. At one point we had a 50+ something inch fish come up straight up out of the water right beside the boat chasing a single baitfish; it reminded me of that photo-shopped internet picture we've all see of the Tuna chasing the flying fish. I'll remember that image all winter. The action settled down, so we decided to troll the area for a while and see if they popped again; they didn't! Continued on to the race, and came upon the fleet right in the middle of an area with a small dragger.I've never seen so many birds sitting on the water in one spot, or so many ballons at anything but a birthday party. Around the corner to PHB, and got our spread out & set. Then the fog came; so thick you couldn't see the bars. We listened to some guy on a small boat with no GPS, radar, or sounder trying to find his friend to lead him home. He was giving his LAT/LON from Google Earth on his cell phone!! Then when they thought they were close, tried to use the horn to confirm. Last I heard they were still trying. Spent the rest of the afternoon looking at GPS, Radar, a 360 look around the boat, and repeat. Plenty of boas at PHB when we arrived evenly split between trolling and fishing with baits. When the fog arrived it made for a very stressful afternoon. Not a sniff from anything, not even a bluefish! We decided to head back into the bay, now regretting having left the fish we saw earlier. Nothing there either. Fog all the way back to the canal, and as far through as the Sagamore bridge, then clear bright skies and FAC water all the way home. Very little chatter about fish & even the guys Cod fishing sounded like things weren't very good. A better day than being at work. In spite of the fog & lack of fish I'm glad I didn't stay home to watch the Pats!
I was glad to see that for once there was actually some communication between boats that posted their plans, but unfortunately it wasn't any help for anyone. Try again!
Thanks CaptainCJ35 and 28Conquest.... First fish of the year for us after getting shutout at least six or seven times already. I'm glad we decided to give Chatham a shot because it paid off for us, and because it sounds like it was the same old story off Stellwagen, Race Point, and Peaked Hill Bar again. We were okay with our gps in the fog but think I'll need to invest in a small radar unit if we're going to fish Chatham more frequently. We'll be back out there this coming weekend, if the weather is okay....

I was turned onto this site this spring by another NH member, but haven't done much saltwater fishing this year. My annual August vacation up in Truro, Cape Cod was a bust fishing wise. But I got down for a semi-annual fall weekend in Chatham with my brother this weekend, and got one of the fish you mention!
At slack high yesterday (Sun) we wandered around with the tuna fleet about 3miles out from the new cut near the high flyers killing time for the tide to wake up teh bass and blues again...saw a few singles break surface but not too exciting. Headed back in for bass/blues when the tide started moving and found several pods of school tuna up top in 35 fow. Luckily one came up behind us, we decided not to fire up the OB and chase, and just waited... they got within casting distnace and this one hammered an 11" bubblegum Got-Stryper up on top. Final broke the ice with my Saragosa 18000 and Tsunami 7'. Last school tuna were back in 2007 for me on a Penn 6500 and an Ugly Stick....

You fellas that troll thourgh the middle of a chum fleet, do you have a clue?![]()
Im new here...but a veteran of online hunting/fishing forums so Ive seen this before.
My take is if you have anyone particular in mind, out with it. If you just jumped on a thread to randomly *****...I guess that's OK to. Were you the guy that cluelessly anchored up to chum right where I planned to troll?
Im kidding.... on the trolling part...
I think there's some trolling going on right here!
