Stripers are not in trouble. The stock was assessed in November and found not to be overfished nor was it being overfished.
However, the recreational limit should be increased to 34" and lowered to 1 fish per day. No need to kill 2 fish per day especially at 28". Best to have commerical and rec minimum size the same.
I'd just like to know how the hell that guy caught over 100 stripers out of the Herring River
Fishypants - I agree. I think size limits need to go up. I would happily suffer w/out taking as many fish for a couple years in effort to start seeing more high 30's and 40" fish on the regular.
I also think a slot limit could do wonders if they set it up right...
Maybe that $10/year they are going to take for my "saltwater recreactional license" could help to do the trick...![]()
I call bullshit. Who does these studies? The population is in trouble b/c some guy only caught 30 off his dock this year? Gimme a break. Quit putting more regulations on the fish itself. Put tighter regs on Omega. Tons of money was spent bringing these fish back from almost extinction, now we're trying our best to take away their #1 food source.
Complete CRAP!!
Thanks for posting though...we're in deep as recreational anglers and commercials alike....we'll all be outlaws soon...
Birdhunter's got it....when the bunker are gone...say byebye to everything else.....cause the Rockfish are gonna eat them too. OMEGA and all the multi-ship monster fleet bunker killers should be shut down....let the small operations exist and ground the friggin spotters too. They'll never hurt em.....won't happen though because there are foxes guarding the henhouse. Almost a waste of time to try to fight em.

I totally agree that without the omega source the species suffer.
I disagree on the slot limit.
A flat minimum size of 34" across the board, with 1 fish per angler for recreational and maintain the current commerical system that is place (MA commerical fishery, as I do not know the regualtions pertaining to other states that still have commercial seasons for bass)
Sorry dude but I gotta disagree. I'm never a fan of more strict regulations on any species.
In VA in the bay, it's 2 fish 18-28" and 1 of those 2 can be over 34". We already have a new rule where a couple weeks in December it goes down to 1 fish per person. Coastal season is 2 over 28". I'd support a bigger size for those fish b/c most of them are 40"+.
What I would like to see is banning Omega and taking away the 3 mile line law. You should see the Omega boats down here rape the menhaden. It's sickening.
So Birddog, what you are essentially saying is the slot limits have worked in VA, and if there were regualtions to slow down the slaughtering of bunker from the draggers, then we would be sitting pretty. Yes?...granted that is a big IF....
I'm not sure we'd be sitting pretty, but I think we would be better off. I'm fine with the current regs. Yes, they've worked. Why change them?
I don't understand the constant changing of size and bag limits for almost any fish. Whose ass do these "researchers" pull these numbers from? The dude that only caught 30 off his dock?
