Maybe its just me, but I caught more small fish last than in any year past, I trolled with my charters on the race and it took a lot to get a keeper fish..that wass most of May and June..Hell I caught 40 bass at the number one on May 7...they were all schoolies with 5 or 6 keepers mixed in...I have zero sympathy for the SF people...they are a Maine based organization that is focusing on the wrong reason to make bass a gamefish. The striped bass has always had ups and downs thanks to the variations in weather around spawning season. The fact that a Maine based organization that basically ruined there fishery with a slot is now trying to push that on everyone else is wrong. Doug Jowett is an old flyfisherman who thinks that anyone who keeps a fish is evil, he is not for any of us he is for himself...do any of you really think that by eliminating a one million pound rod and reel caught commercial quota that the bass are going to miraculously return to Maine? TYhe fish go where the bait is...fix the bait fix the problem....Leave the hardworking fishermen of Massachusetts alone go pick on Omega protien and Perdue, get them to clean up their act!
I fish from CT River to Block for stripers early in the season, 07 and 08 were insane years for me as far as big stripers go, we caught hundreds over 30 pounds and around 50 that were over 40 pounds, we also had the most bunker I have ever seen in my life. Last year I caught one fish over 40 pounds and maybe 6 over 30 pounds, but pounded the 28 to 32 inch fish like no tommorow......
Save the BAIT..........Although I did run into a dragger that was hauling up and disposing of hundreds of half dead bass off the Cape To bad they can't get Omega from Dogfish...
Well said Doug. SF doesn't represent the Mass. fisherman and people need to realize they are no friend to us in any form. Gamefish status is not what is needed and I am tired of sitting back and watching traditional forms of fishing get hammered by do-gooders who do not even venture offshore beyond the mile mark, and yet they try to preach about what is going on in the oceans. If SF really cared about the Bass they would be all over the dragger by-catch, bait issues, and polution, which is what has always caused issues with the Bass population not ROD and REEL fishing. With the bass issue and cities I have had to take a good long look at some of the fishing groups who I use to think were good for us. Don't get me wrong, SF was never on my good list, not ever. Not too many tackle stores will take a stand on this issue because of fear from this group, but hey, my shop is like Northern Iraq, a no "FLY" zone Capt. Eric
Will you guys down the Cape, please get someone to run against this clown Patrick. Now he's dabing in TUNA too. ( See Chris's Blog Above/below) Gotta be more Scott Brown Guys down there.
Sorry to burst your bubble guys, but here goes. Omega was founded by John A. Haynie in 1878 down in Va. The company merged in 1970 with Zapata oil corp. to form Zapata/Haynie corp. In 1990 it was re-named Zapata protein and in 1998 re-named Omega protein.
Now the kicker, seems a fella from Kennebunk Port started/owns Zapata..............George H.W. Bush
Guys - thanks for the info and the views over the last couple of days....I will be honest in saying that prior to the article i did not know about this evil corporation (Omega) and their raping and pilaging of what is clearly an essential part of the Striper cycle.
Unfortunetly, when people are getting rich and lining their pockets with cash, nobody wants to think about imposing, or worse, following regulations....
I agree that a million pounds of Rod'n'reel is not the major cause and effect, but it is rather, all about the bait!
