Stinger scent? (no CITES-related responses, please)

I have been going over my BFT notes and logs from past seasons... rethinking tactics, locations, etc. for the upcoming tuna season.

One thing I have not done in the past but I'm considering trying here in 2010 is soaking my stingers in fish offal/chum/menhaden oil before fishing with them.

I know there are a few guys out here that do this, and I'd love to get feedback on best practices and most importantly results. In short: does it work?

I know the guys were making these tube and worm rigs for Bass filled with pogie oil. We tried one and it was a messy pain in the ass.

Don't see why the same principle wouldn't apply.

I haven't tried it offshore, but I would advise keeping any bunker oil OFF your gear if there are any bluefish anywhere around. They will come from miles around to tear into that oil-soaked lure. The oldtimers always used a piece of sponge to soak up the oil, then stuff it into the skirt/bulb squid (or whatever). I don't see why it would be a bad thing. But remember, no tuna likes a heavy oil slick..............

My old man had a daisy chain of rigged mackerel bouncing in his wake at full throttle trying to outrun a mako. They were nuisances in the 70s.

I can see that bringing in the doggies.............then you'd really have no friends out there.

I have had luck tipping the stinger with a large porkrind. Must be the salty taste that helps out a bit. I'm sure you could soak rinds in oil and have some success.
