Stellwagon on Saturday, August 21
Left Plymouth at 5:00 with 35 live scup trucked up from Narr Bay and 12 pogies. SW corner was relatively lively as we first arrived with a few whales, birds and slicks in the area. We decided to drift to cover more ground and despite the lack of wind, managed to get the kite up relatively quickly. baits looked good but after 3 hours of resetting/redrifting we had nothing to show. At 10:00 the wind died nearly completely so we switched over to bump trolling our baits on the outriggers. Slowly we crept along the contour line, first around the SW corner, then headed north to the notch, eventually covering the notch area and circling back down. By 2:00 the wind had increased enough for the kite and we went back on the drift. We did mark fish in several areas but couldn't get anything to come up for a bite. The 4 kids on the boat threw jigs after the marks but could only muster 15-25 pound bass that quickly went back into the drink. At 3:30 we went lines out for a nice ride in. Sounds like everyone, and I do mean everyone, had a similar day out there. Still wondering if the scup will work...

be careful fishing with scup as bait. to the best of my knowlage it is against the law to use a game fish as bait and some how a scup is a game fish. just something to think about.

that's interesting about not being able to use scup. I had always believed that the size limits must be adhered to but you could certainly use them. Scup are used widely by anglers fishing for striped bass. anyone else have any info on this?
