Hit water at 5:30 a.m. for a smooth ride out to the bank. crossed SW corner and saw nothing on our way to the East. Once we crossed the 140' mark on the SE corner life began to appear in the false dawn. a few birds, whales and slicks all over the place. Bars went out quickly but no hits for over an hour despite seeing tuna literally in all directions. at 7:30 I pulled up to neutral when I marked some great fish at 120'. The guys quickly lowered jigs into the range and on the first drop we were on...now the other guys cleared the trolling rigs and we were off to the races...and then it was over. Leader came back chafed. tuna must have swallowed the Ron-z and we were unlucky. Back to the drawing board. We changed our trolled offerings (mistake? who knows...) and went back to sluggos WTF back with bars up close. We kept stopping on good marks but were only finding the endangered dog fish and a few cod. at 10:30 on another great mark, we dropped the jigs again and went tight again. This time, unfortunately we hooked a big fish, well beyond the slot limit, and wrestled for over 45 minutes before feeling the terrible "slack." the hook had simply pulled. We went lines back in and worked the area hard until 3:30 but we had no other hookups. It was, however, the best weather day we've had in over 4 months. Unfortunately it was likely our last.
