    Stellwagen Sat Sept 17th Report

Just a quick report. Logged on to see how anybody else did today and no posts yet so I figured I`d post mine.

Left Green Harbor at 6:30 am and called Iron Skippy to see if he had bait for us. He said no-go on the bait today so we headed north towards Scituate hoping for macs. A little past North River stopped on some marks and got a dozen mackeral in 67 feet. We weren`t going to catch the low tide on the southern bank or PHB for tuna in the slop so we decided to mosey over to east of middle bank. Figured we`d try for cod and maybe shark and throw a live mac at any tuna we saw. Trolled some squid bars part of the way on top of the bank. Nothing on the troll but the cod bite was there in 240 feet east of the bank. Didn`t limit out or anything only five cod and a lot of pollock thrown back. The cod were decent size, to 33 inches. Tripled up on one drop, two 27" cod on the teasers and a small cod on the jig. A few dogs but not many. Saw a big fish jump off our stern,Mako?? Tried sharking for a while and not even a blue dog.

Headed in with much nicer conditions, trolled from mid bank to past the western edge while cleaning the cod. Would of done a lot better on the cod if we just fished for them for the day but we were all over the place trying to fish for everything at once, lol.

Not a bad day was going to go tomorrow but I`m exhausted and it looks like a pretty good east wind tomorrow anyway.

    Didn`t see one tuna.

Was on the west side of middle bank yesterday as well and did not see one tuna but had decent cod and pollock. Lost one small mako and had several blue dogs.

Very little life there.............only saw one whale all day.

I fished solo Sat and got a bite on the NWC around 10 on a large mac. Small fish that pulled the hook before I could gaff it. That was the only bite on the corner that I could see all morning. I left at noon as it didnt look like it was going to happen. Seems real slow for September lately.

Starting to hear about more action on the NWC, and I saw and marked fish last week mid-bank, eastern edge. Good news for us in Boston if in picks up at all.

Heading out again wednesday, looks to be a nice day. Going to concentrate on the cod and hopefully haddock this time. Will make a quick stop for some macs in case we see tuna and bring the squid bars of course but we aint stopping unless we see tuna breaking or really good marks.

Will bleed the cod in a cooler with ice and sea water and use that as a chum slick while we drift and clean the fish in the afternoon for shark. Kind of of a half assed chum slick but it usually works when the sharks are thick.

    Very slow

Headed out sat around 5:45 am, a little sloppy on the way didn't make better than 16 kts the whole way out. Steamed past the swc on our way to phb, marked one or two fish down deep but no surface activity. made it to past race point and finally saw a couple of other boats prior to this we only spotted one other boat.
Set out the gear and trolled north then west then east toward the golf ball, nothing no birds no whales no fish. saw a couple of boat off in the distance to the north and decided to head up there, on our way we started to see some life some bird activity and a couple of whales but no fish, no marks. Then about 10 miles off th beach we head west, mostly to avoid a couple of dredge boats to the north.
Around 10:30 - 10:45 the way back on the center rigger gets knocked down, Fish on. although he takes a strong first run it turns out to be a small fish. twenty minutes later we boat a 50" appox 85 lbs fish nice and fat for a little guy. Were happy head to the barn. Never marked any fish the last hour, very slow. we got lucky.
Not sure if any other fish were taken, even the radio was slow. Does anyone know who won the tournament? Haven't heard a word and nothing on the website. Of course we didnt enter.
